How about a thread about a rather special train, the TMST (Trans Manche Super Train)? This was the project name for the high-speed train designed to link London, Paris and Brussels via the Channel Tunnel when it opened in 1994.

Some days at work are just special.

I was honoured to work with one of my best friends on his last day at Eurostar today, we gave him a traditional welcome into St Pancras on his last train.

Thank you to all the passengers of train 9031 today who took the time to wish him well, he was touched!

A wet and miserable Saturday evening in London: Time for the last train to Brussels. Very different weather in Belgium, we've got a 160 kmh speed restriction due to snow between Lille and Brussels.

Britain has set a new wind generation record.

"At 7:30pm on 11 November wind turbines...provided enough clean electricity to power more than 22 million homes"

"Wind was delivering 43.6% of all power on the system which means three quarters of Britain’s homes were effectively running on wind alone"
Windpower sets new record for baseload - Energy Live News
Wind supplied 43% of all power last week setting a new record of 22.7 GW

This is what 300 kmh on an icy evening looks like. Lots of arcing from the pantograph (current collector) as it picks up 25,000 volts to power the train.

Sunset view from the rear of the 15:31 to Paris. 31 is the magic number today as that's how many years I've now done on the railway.

Bit parky out. Might need one of Uncle Joe's mint balls that I bought yesterday in Wigan.

Highlight of my 2 days away? Easy! Catching up with Our Kid in Manchester for a couple of hours before the train home. He's so lucky to be studying in such a great city. 🐝

Confession time: The main reason for my trip wasn't to visit Blackpool. It was a pilgrimage to Preston for a visit to the brutalist bus station. It didn't disappoint.

Blackpool: It's like Paris but a bit more northern.

If eurostar went to Blackpool...

My lovely colleague Abdel announces the stops from Preston with a Marseille twist. Nearly 4 years later, this still makes me guffaw.

Today's destination: Blackpool Nord. Not by eurostar. The image was a bit of nonsense to lighten the mood in the depths of travel restrictions during the pandemic.

It was picked up by local news in Lancashire.

Nice shoes! Back when eurostar started, there was no high-speed line between London and the Channel Tunnel so we had to use the "classic" network and the 750 volt third rail system. This limited the power and speed obviously. Heard it described as using a Ferrari to go to the corner shop...

Happy 31st Birthday eurostar! On this day in 1994, the first commercial services started. 2 trains a day each way between London and Paris/Brussels back then.
