yes .. deep vs shallow learning - something I discovered too late !!
eurowalksscotland.bsky.social
they maybe think they are learning as the AI writes it all out neatly for them - but the minute you try and explore what they know, or get them to apply the learning - well ... I feel it makes them look or feel good on purely a surface level. It can help but it is just one tool among many incl books

it just gets it wrong so many times !

I slouch on my couch !
I like to think couch maybe also derives a bit from French but I haven't looked into that

well according to the NYT English and Irish dialect study there was definitely regional differences - I think there is another commonly used word for the thing you sit on as well - but I forget that one !

I'd probably use uplift if it was something unusual like a couch (sofa) that the council was collecting.
apparently whether you say couch, sofa or settee is also region specific - sadly the New York Times English language survey is no longer freely available as it was excellent to try on all this !

This photograph is currently listed as an "unknown location". Can anyone help us identify where this may have been? I suspect that these buildings may no longer exist. This was probably taken in the early 1960s.

I am being diverted here but this is important - my great aunt caught polio and had to walk using a caliper for the rest of her life - and she was probably one of the lucky ones. Immunisation works.
It has been known about and used for hundreds of years as well

The polio immunisation program started in the USA in 1955.

Look what happened next.

I knew outwith was Scots but I have never used the word uplift - is that an unusual word ?! though I imagine I would have to use it if the council was uplifting something - what else would you say ...

The world's largest folk festival takes place in Munich every year, attracting 6-7m visitors.

Oktoberfest opens its doors on Saturday.

The origins go back to 1810, when the marriage of Bavarian Prince Ludwig I & Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen was celebrated.
