Much has been speculated on the impact of industrial deep-sea mining on marine ecosystems. This study led by @evastewart.bsky.social provides some direct empirical evidence.

While exploring Ahyi Seamount, the team spotted this Diadema setosum #urchin nestled in an algae bed around 74 meters deep. These #marineinvertebrates are known for their extremely long, black, hollow spines interspersed with stinging, pincher-like pedicellariae.

Paper out today from the #NHMDeepSea team on these strange little worms from the abyss. First of 3 highly technical papers on them, possibly not headline-makers but science is all in the detail. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

A great paper, albeit with a bleak message, that recovery in the deep sea, if possible at all, will occur on decadal to century scales. #deepsea #marinelife #science www.nature.com/articles/s41...
