"Plessy v. Ferguson" The case arose from an incident in which Homer Plessy, a man of mixed race, was arrested for sitting in a "whites-only" railway car in Louisiana. Plessy challenged the law as it violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
