@mikegrunwald.bsky.social explains why factory farms might be better for the environment. Of course, they're not a perfect solution, but with 40% of the Earth's land dedicated to agriculture, we need to figure out how to produce more crops with less land, and factory farms are pretty good at it.
The problem with sustainability is that you'll never make the perfect choice, just better ones. The two biggest impacts you can have? Eating less beef and wasting less food.

Photosynthesis: a billions-old process that's actually kinda inefficient. @mikegrunwald.bsky.social discusses researchers at @uofilsystem.bsky.social's efforts to improve the process with AI, potentially increasing crop yields up to 50% in 20 years and how it could save our farming future.

"Bad answers beat no answers." Donald Trump is an example of that. We can't hold back new policies because they don't perfectly align with everything we want. We have to be laser-focused on delivering results.

The Biden administration's fatal flaw was taking too long to deliver results, and that showed in the election results. For government to be effective, it must also be responsive, and that means delivering on quicker timelines.

In a supply-constrained market, 50-year mortgages won't solve the issue. In fact, they might make things worse. For an average of $100 in savings, assuming you have the same interest rate (and you very well might not!), you lose out on building equity. Michael Negron's verdict: gimmick.

The rent is too damn high. And for renters in buildings with property management software, it's even higher by about $800. The DOJ has filed a class action against RealPage, alleging that their way of setting rent is a form of price fixing.

Let's get rid of red tape around affordable housing, starting with the requirement for a steel chassis at the bottom of a manufactured home. This outdated HUD rule allows a home to be moved, but most homes are not moved these days. Michael Negron discusses this and more on our new episode, out now!

If people like a policy, it sticks around. If people don't know about it, it expires. We need to account for popularity when designing public policy to ensure it keeps working like it's supposed to.

How do we enact real, progressive change? Get a supermajority in the Senate. Adam Jentleson is talking 55, 56 votes, not a slim majority that could die with just one person refusing to vote yes.

If you build it, they will come...sit in hours in traffic. Jake Berman explains why induced demand means that we can never build enough lanes for cars to solve the gridlock problem.

Transit will only compete with cars if we design it to. If we prioritize single-occupancy vehicles over 50 people on a bus, the choice is made for us.

When a Congressman drops his reading list, you know it's gonna be good 📚

@repauchincloss.bsky.social recommends:

• "A Brief History of Intelligence" by Max Bennett (1st cognitive leap was dopamine for steering)

• "The Origin of Efficiency" by Brian Potter (about lightbulb manufacturing)

Spicy take from @repauchincloss.bsky.social: "I don't use the term abundance"

His argument: "Walk into Costco—tons of stuff. The problem is housing, healthcare, and utilities have cost disease and are suffocating the middle class. More isn't the answer. Curing the Baumol effect is."
