It will be hard to hold ICE agents accountable for their increasingly brutal crimes. Hard, but not impossible.

Under Color of Law
ICE agents' routine violence and misconduct must be punished. But while some local law enforcement agencies are stepping up, mostly, accountability rests on the shoulders of victims.

We are torturing again, nearly a quarter century after the Bush Admin. authorized "enhanced interrogation." There was no accountability then, and if there is none now, it won't be the last time.
Torture in the Everglades
Allegations of torture in DeSantis' makeshift migrant prison are a reminder of past impunity for "enhanced interrogations."

The Deportation Bandwagon
Escalating anti-immigrant rhetoric raises fears of some kind of pogrom that could result. But meanwhile, the deportation machine rolls on.

Relatives of a Colmbian victim of a Hegseth strike appealed to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for justice. Here's why it doesn't matter - and why it does.

As more and more warships arrive off the coast of Venezuela, I wonder: are we on the cusp of a new "Donroe Doctrine"? And will it lead to a kind of Putinesque war of aggression, or just Trumpian feints and bluffery?

Alongside the physical removal of immigrants, the Trump Administration is escalating a rhetorical war against the idea of letting non-white migrants into the country. This was successful for consolidating autocracy in Hungary, but it flies in the face of everything Americans believe about ourselves.
Stephen Miller's Race War
This weekend's first mass shooting has sparked a furious anti-immigration reaction from across the federal government. It is a dangerous moment.

Consolidating autocratic power requires bringing the military to heel, and the tradition of loyalty to the Constitution and not the man makes the U.S. an especially tough case. But attacks on Mark Kelly and the others may be a path towards a more pliable military to support Trumpian aims.

I've been thinking about white supremacists, and how they seem different than the ones that were around the Pacific Northwest when I grew up. They are more fearful today, more conscious of the truth, which is that their time is up.

If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

Algorithmic Oppression
Unconscious biases are encoded into the structure of our online lives. As Big Tech bends to the Trump authoritarian agenda, will conscious bias make the problem worse?

Cuts to American foreign aid have killed more than half a million people so far. But it's not only the U.S. - many European countries like Germany and the UK have cut back as well. One thing these countries share is the emergence of a hard nativist far right beginning in 2015.
Letting Die
Foreign aid has declined by 28% for next year. The lion's share is because of Trump Administration cuts - but not all.

Is the no-bid contract DHS made to Noem associates run of the mill graft, or a sign of Eastern European-style kleptocracy at work?

Kirsti Noem's no-bid media contract seems of a piece with Eastern European alliances of wealth and dictatorial power.

In the face of Trump’s willingness to inflict mass cruelty, the moral concern of the left makes it vulnerable. But why doesn’t that cruelty inspire similar reactions among conservatives? Here's a theory.

The trouble in playing politics with psychopaths is that their cruelty can force you into situations where every option is terrible. The key is to follow the Jesuit moral philosophers and think hard about what terrible choices you should make.

Eight Democrats did not make the better bad choice.
Hostage Situations
Eight Democrats caved last night. I am angry, but I can't entirely blame them. The amorality of their opponents makes every option feel like a bad one.
