Consolidating autocratic power requires bringing the military to heel, and the tradition of loyalty to the Constitution and not the man makes the U.S. an especially tough case. But attacks on Mark Kelly and the others may be a path towards a more pliable military to support Trumpian aims.

I've been thinking about white supremacists, and how they seem different than the ones that were around the Pacific Northwest when I grew up. They are more fearful today, more conscious of the truth, which is that their time is up.

In the face of Trump’s willingness to inflict mass cruelty, the moral concern of the left makes it vulnerable. But why doesn’t that cruelty inspire similar reactions among conservatives? Here's a theory.
The trouble in playing politics with psychopaths is that their cruelty can force you into situations where every option is terrible. The key is to follow the Jesuit moral philosophers and think hard about what terrible choices you should make.
