On this day three years ago, an employee of the Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Virginia opened fire on a group of co-workers with a Taurus 9mm pistol and high-capacity magazines he had just purchased. Six people were killed and six more were wounded.

Tamir Rice, 12, was playing at Cudell Park in Cleveland when he was shot and killed by a police officer 11 years ago today. In his honor, his mother, Samaria, founded The Tamir Rice Afrocentric Cultural Center—a community space for young people. A butterfly memorial was also installed at the park.

A 4-year-old boy unintentionally shot and wounded himself after finding an unsecured gun at his home in Durham, North Carolina. Authorities said it was at least the second unintentional shooting by a child in the city this month.

These tragedies are preventable with secure gun storage.
