Experienced something on this morning’s hike to Lake Ramona that we haven’t felt in many months: cold. With the cloudy skies a decent breeze, it was shiver-inducing. Tuesday will be even cooler, plus rainy. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

If it hasn't quite felt like fall, by Southern California standards, it should by Tuesday. It will be cool and probably rainy. The weather service expects a couple of tenths of an inch of rain at the S.D. County coast, a little more in the valleys, more still in the mountains. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

It’s probably a bit early to call it spooky, but it’s clearly eerie this morning here in inland North County, with visibility under a 1/4 mile. The weather service says low clouds will return tonight, & a chance of showers, this time from the north, enters the picture Tuesday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Another bountiful harvest: Oak Project volunteers picked 445 viable acorns from Kim Smith's very productive Englemann near Julian on Thursday. Many thanks to Kim, who invited us out for the picking. The acorns will soon go into pots, & hopefully seedlings will be ready to distribute in spring. #oaks

Should be another good day to keep eyes on the skies. The weather service says the coast and valleys could get some light rain (0.01 to 0.10 of an inch) by Saturday, while the mountains could get a good soaking - as much as 0.7 in Mount Laguna. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Put to the test: One of the ways to check if an acorn is a good candidate for propagation is the float test. When placed in water, more viable acorns will sink. Those that float have air pockets and are likely to have been damaged by insects like weevils. Discard floaters, keep sinkers. #oaks #trees

Here's the weather service's latest forecast for the next few days west of the mountains. We've got another chance of showers next week, too. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The Bay Area's rainiest day since last winter is possible next week as energy from a recurving West Pacific typhoon dislodges cold air from Canada and whips up a storm along the West Coast. The freezing level could fall as low as 5,000 feet, priming the Sierra for potential snow, including Tahoe.

A flood watch is out for the deserts. The watch runs from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening. The weather service says. No watch over the San Diego County mountains, but thunderstorms are possible there, too. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus): This brilliantly coloured 21cm (8.3in) woodpecker species is native to forested areas with oaks from south west USA to Colombia. Remarkable photo by Jay Spring taken in Orange, California, USA. For more of Jay's shots see: www.springphotos.net #woodpecker

No need to up the flood insurance, but there's POTENTIAL (below) for decent rainfall in the mountains. Here's how much rain the NWS is currently expecting in a few spots by Saturday morn: Julian, 0.37 of an inch; Borrego, 0.22; Fallbrook, 0.10; El Cajon, 0.08; San Diego, 0.04. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The weather service has upped the odds for rain on Thursday from remnants of Hurricane Priscilla. The chances are now slightly less Friday. If the rain happens, we'll likely get just a few hundredths of an inch at the coast & in the valleys, maybe 2 tenths in the mountains. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Priscilla is expected to be a major hurricane later today, with sustained winds of 115 mph. The outer bands of the storm are already affecting the southern tip of Baja. Priscilla should be a tropical depression after it veers right. It should reach the U.S. border region Sunday. #CAwx #Priscilla

Socked in this morning here in inland North County. Visibility under 1/4 mile. Remnants of Hurricane Priscilla should begin to arrive Thursday. The weather service has about a 25% chance of showers west of the mountains Thursday, then the odds go up just a tiny bit Friday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The sun started to break through around 9 this morning at Escondido’s Daley Ranch. Pic is of Mallard Pond. Mild, early-fall temperatures expected in the valleys this week before a chance of showers arrives Thursday night and lasts through Saturday afternoon. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Hurricane Priscilla will not make it close to Southern California, but remnants of the storm could come into play. The weather service says San Diego will have a slight chance of showers from Thursday night through Saturday afternoon. Better odds for rain are in the desert. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

So far, the dry, offshore flow we often get in October hasn't shown up. Instead, we've got a moist onshore flow & low clouds. Forecasters say later this week, we could see another batch of subtropical moisture as remnants of Tropical Storm Priscilla are drawn over the region. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

A trip to Pala Thursday yielded 516 viable acorns for propagation. Much thanks to Phil, one of The Oak Project’s biggest donors and supporters. The acorns were from coast live oaks (Quercus agrifolia); scrub oaks (pictured, Quercus berberidifolia); and Englemanns (Quercus engelmanni). #oaks #trees
