Hermit
Pinned
Is it custom to do an introductory post and pin it? I'm a rather boring person, but here goes.

I'm a hermit. I leave the house around once a month for groceries, my mind and body aren't what they used to be, making me too unreliable to support a team. My hobbies, then, are purely solo. 1/
The NTSB is taking names. Holy crap. Do they do work from home? I'd put in an application today if I can work from my couch.

Bone marrow biopsy confirms I'm male.

Hopefully there's more information to come, because that's a long way to go to ask to verify my driver's license.

This (and the followup post) is short, atmospheric, and amazing. Read and share it.
The moon told me your name tonight.

Doctors: You need less blood.

How will that help?

Later: Well, I'll be damned.

Most problems with modern electronics can be solved by not connecting them to the Internet.

I'm still not used to things actually working on the first try, but here we are.

And half of my code is error handling these days.

And I spent an hour last night asking exactly *when* I should load an asset.

This is the most boring way to be a wizard, I tell you.

This episode on "Is it safe to eat?" Grandma's Peanut Butter Cookies, expired in 2022. So far, not dead.

I wrote ad copy exactly once. It was a profoundly negative experience.

"Write about this."

"Do you have the specifications or details?"

"It's all on the site," which meant no.

It was the most vague, useless nonsense ever. And I see it on every single website I visit. No details, just word count.

I finally solved my ASA delamination problem with my printer. All it took was putting a 300 watt heater in the enclosure and redlining everything to keep the chamber at 50 C.

At least I only need to do it for large parts, and the 40 C I get with just the printer is enough for most things.

Are there any Fallout fans who consider "the original games" to be 1 and 2, who have opinions on the new TV series? I haven't watched it because I expect it to enrage me because it's based on Todd Howard's misunderstanding of the source material.

I think woodworking chisels are for people who enjoy sharpening things.

The next step on the mid-life (If I'm real lucky) crisis shop is casting, apparently. And I have spent twice as much on PPE as I have on the furnace itself. And I *still* haven't grabbed a respirator.

Even with a 40C enclosure, I'm getting warping and delamination in the same quantity as ~25C. ASA is a harsh mistress.

I use a dozen gallons a year of distilled water for high-voltage coolant loops and my CPAP. If you remember my tales of finding water at 3 a.m. you may see this coming, but I bought a water distiller. It should pay for itself in three years. That's how much I hate leaving the house.

Remember when Vader said "I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further," and we all thought that was some super cold blooded line from a true villain?

When did we start accepting forced EULA changes?

To not use keywords:

Sitting around, watching a video on current surface events, and all I think are "Gee, those systems sure are sub-optimal!"

Not sure if I'm sad or happy to not be in that industry. The percentage of my life this incident has been going on is growing concerning.

So, I am currently reaching a bottleneck with art. Can a general sense of aesthetics be learned? Especially if one is aphantasic? I imagine being able to . . . imagine . . . things makes it easier to create art.

I don't want to copy compositions, only hacks do that, but I'm not sure where to start

An obvious symptom of my poor planning:

I've been doing a midlife crisis "build a shop on credit," and I just received my parallels.

I . . . uh . . . don't have a vice.

Nobody 2 is nothing like the original in all the worst ways. I love the cast, but it's just comedy John Wick, but all action scenes with almost no actual character development, which is what made the first one great. It's a parody of itself.

Can't win 'em all. Odenkirk and Lloyd still rule.

I just realized ZA-8, copper, and so many other materials, actually have higher yield strength than A36 steel. I know it's not the only important material property, but what a strange thing to learn.

Food for thought: I do my own DNS server for security's sake. It works pretty well and I have nearly zero problems.

Then I blocked some hardwired IP DNS servers and DoH systems and now I get problems.

Meaning all those sites/pieces of software call home bypassing DNS resolution. Good to know.

I wish I would have known that as an independent contractor there is no safety if I'm injured when I got my liability insurance, but I guess I had to learn the hard way 😮‍💨

Unsolicited advice:

Be mindful and live in the present. To chase the future or dwell in the past only causes you to devalue the moment.

The number of times you'll see a sunrise, talk to a loved one, or eat a fine meal are far fewer than you think; give each moment your full attention.
