I had the pleasure and honor of working alongside so many talented people in NOCTURNALIS. My piece is a medical nightmare featuring a sleep deprived freelancer just trying to make ends meet + a screen addicted doctor conducting a sleep study.

The dark mode version of the Nocturnalis zine, a preview of my piece, Screen Time. The page is bordered by a sleepy purple goo. It says: Baked in fluorescent lights, sweating through his winter layers, Marino Bosque tucks himself into a crowded corner in a hospital waiting room. A woman to his left checks her email, and on his right, another tries to wrangle three children clambering on and off her lap. Thankfully Marino's able to squeeze his knees together, fold his arms in his lap, and keep to himself. They never make these damn chairs big enough for all the people a medical office crams into one room. It's loud. They always are. Even thirty years ago, when he was a child using his own mother as a tree, the waiting room was a warzone of conflicting entertainment; handhelds, TV re-runs, arguments at the check-in desk… You can replace it all with cell phones and iPads, but the green-lit room still exists as a cacophony. Amidst the clamor, Marino feels better about sliding out his phone. His headphones broke last week, but no one's going to notice the quiet hum of the reels passing him by with each swipe of his thumb.
