Free-range parenting? Dinosaurs cared less, research suggests
While modern mammals hover over their offspring until adulthood, dinosaur parents showed less involvement — caring for their young a few months or a year before leaving them to roam alone, research from the University of Maryland suggests. “Dinosaurs were more like latchkey kids,” said Thomas Holtz Jr., a geology lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park, in a story posted on the ...

The asteroid that destroyed dinosaurs has left its evidence in a crater buried deep in Mexico.

MSN
; ; About 66 million years ago, a cosmic collision reshaped life on Earth. A massive asteroid, roughly 10â15 kilometres wide, slammed into our planet with unimaginable force. The result was a global catastrophe that wiped out about 75% of all species, including non-avian dinosaurs. For decades, scientists have sought the exact location of this ancient impact site. Today, thanks to geology, physics, and millions of years of evidence, we know just where it happened. The crater left behind is called the Chicxulub crater, named after the nearby town of Chicxulub in the state of Yucatn, Mexico. What makes Chicxulub especially intriguing is that it isn't a dramatic hole like you might imagine. The crater is mostly buried under sediment and ocean water off the northern coast of Mexico's Yucatn Peninsula. It stretches over 180â200 kilometres in diameter, making it one of the largest confirmed impact structures on Earth. Scientists identified it in the late 1970s and early 1980s through studies of underwater gravity and rock formations. Later drilling confirmed that rocks beneath the region show clear signs of extreme shock and deformation, the kind expected when a gigantic asteroid strikes. The asteroid hit at nearly 20 km per second, releasing more energy than billions of nuclear bombs. Dust, ash and rock blasted into the atmosphere blocked sunlight, chilling the planet. Forests and oceans collapsed. Food chains broke. The world entered a period called the CretaceousâPaleogene (KâPg) extinction event, forever changing life on Earth. Today, scientists study the Chicxulub crater to understand ancient climates, rapid extinctions, and how life recovered afterward. Chicxulub is not just a geological curiosity. It's a powerful reminder that Earth's history has been shaped by forces far greater than human time scales, cosmic events capable of resetting life itself. The Chicxulub crater lies mostly buried beneath the northern Yucatn Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico waters. It measures about 180â200 kilometres across, making it one of the biggest impact sites on Earth. The asteroid that created it struck with energy greater than 10 billion Hiroshima-style nuclear bombs. The impact occurred at the end of the Cretaceous, about 66 million years ago, marking the boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods. This collision triggered what scientists call the KâPg mass extinction, wiping out roughly three-quarters of all species. Rocks from beneath the crater show tell-tale evidence of shock transformation — something only possible from an enormous impact. Drilling into the crater revealed melted rock and shocked quartz, signatures shared with other confirmed impact sites. The town of Chicxulub, Mexico gave the crater its name because it sits near the centre of the buried structure.
