@faultlinenotes.bsky.social
We live along faultlines: places where rights, power, and principles collide.
Some cracks are loud. Others are quiet. All of them shape the world we live in.
These are our Notes from the Faultine.
ICE is leaving Minnesota.

What remains:
Ttrauma that will outlast this operation 🧠
Children and families pulled into fear 🧒
Citizens left to carry the costs 🧾
Remaining impunity for killers of Renee Good and Alex Pretti ⚖️
One more crack in democracy, in the US and beyond 🗳️

“Due process is not a courtesy extended at the government's convenience. Due process is the condition that makes custody lawful in the first place.“ 💪🇺🇸

⤵️
Another memorable ruling out of West Virginia, where Judge Goodwin — a Clinton appointee — excoriates the treatment of ICE detainees.

"This is not what civil enforcement looks like in a humane system of government under law."

Putting a name to a faultline: when “security” becomes a moral blank cheque, and courts, media, universities, and policing start bending around fear 🇺🇸⚡️🇮🇱

#OnThisDay February 1, 1947, the newly established UN Commission on Human Rights created a special drafting committee to write the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

#OnThisDay February 1, 1960: four students from North Carolina A&T State University sat at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro.

They stayed; and sit-ins spread across the South.

Courage is contagious, and change can start with taking a stand ✊🏾

After joining Board of Peace, with reports of a $1bn buy-in, Azerbaijan is already diverging from Donald Trump on Iran protests 🇦🇿🇺🇸

Baku wants calm next door; it would not want people in Azerbaijan inspired by brave Iranians protesting repression ⚡️

If Azerbaijan wants a seat on Trump’s “Board of Peace”, it should stop jailing peace activists and release Bahruz Samadov 🕊️⚡️🇦🇿

He should not be transferred. He should not be in prison. He asked internationals to attend the hearing ⚠️

Today is Holocaust Memory Day.

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 — the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp — as a day to honor the victims of the Holocaust and promote human rights education. Never forget.

He did not fix everything. But he understood that civic space is part of democracy, not a threat. And he was decent. Another era.

What does Trump really want with the “Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place”?

A structure to move fast, keep control, and limit participation.
