There are so many cities that need to consolidate, and could probably lower their property taxes a lot for the same services if they did.

And a certain Austin-area personal injury lawyer who comes into that former county judge's social media mentions to lick his privates on a daily basis.

I suppose that that's something NIMBYs are more willing to compromise on, as long as they still feel like other laws exist that ensure they still have control over where housing gets built in the first place.
November 23, 2025 at 4:44 PM
Abolishing parking minimums has been a really big success of YIMBY. Even a lot of cities that are still adamantly against real housing reforms, like San Francisco and Denver, have been successfully pressured to get rid of parking minimums. parkingreform.org/resources/ma...

True, the Philadelphia metropolitan area is still about 3x that of San Antonio's. It's got way more populous collar counties.
November 23, 2025 at 4:35 PM
San Antonio is also growing insanely fast... there's now a good chance they'll overtake Philadelphia this decade to become America's sixth-largest city.

There's a reason why Austin is one of the only large cities in the U.S. where rent is falling at the same time population is growing. They are building at an insane pace.

And Austin isn't even the fastest growing city in Texas! Fort Worth is growing faster now. They beat Austin to 1 million people.
November 23, 2025 at 4:20 PM
And it's not just the supertalls downtown — Austin is building in every way possible.

They've built planned mixed-use communities like
Mueller and the Domain. They reformed zoning to allow multifamily infill in older neighborhoods. They're creating new greenfield suburbs 30, 40, 50 miles away.

The Austin skyline shows just a bonkers level of growth in 10 years.

And even the bottom picture is now outdated because it doesn't include the supertall I posted above.
November 23, 2025 at 4:10 PM
The Waterline Tower is pretty near complete.

This is by far the tallest building in Austin, and it's also the tallest building in any city anywhere in the South. At 1,025ft, it's just barely almost as tall as the Chrysler Building.

Another legacy of John Roberts
We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.
