Some out of office messages echoed what many agencies have put on their websites about the shutdown. These out of office messages were not written or approved by individual employees despite the messages going out under their names.

These messages are the latest example where the Trump administration has blamed Democrats for the government shutdown using official channels.

So far, only the Patent and Trademark Office has issued RIF notice (to about 140). More may we'll be coming later this week / early next.

The Office of Management and Budget has directed agencies to consider shutting down programs whose funding ends September 30, accompanying those program shutdowns would be RIFs.

This potentially affects programs (and personnel) which are not required by statute.

If there is a government shutdown next week, large numbers of employees may be subject to a Reduction in Force (RIF).

That would be a much more aggressive step than in previous shutdowns. A reduction in force would not only lay off employees but eliminate the position.

Defense has seen the most losses with ~55K to date. These reductions include RIFs and DRP, among other reasons.

Three agencies--Agriculture, Defense, and Treasury--have seen their workforce reduced by 100,000+ so far this year. These 3 agencies have had the largest reductions which total ~200K so far with an additional 100K expected between now and calendar year end.

According to GovExec, the Department of the Navy will cut ~35% of its civilian Public Affairs Officers. The Department of Defense is down ~60,000 civilian (out of 700K) employees since January.
