Detections like these are significant because diseases carried by free-ranging dogs, i.e., parvovirus and rabies, are easily transmissible to wild cats-

Some cats do like water! A camera trap recently captured a jaguar swimming 0.8 miles near the Serra da Mesa hydroelectric dam in Brazil. While it’s known that jaguars use riverbanks for ambush hunting, the previously recorded swim distance for a jaguar was just 650ft.

A recent encounter with a juvenile mountain lion in Southern CA led to OC Parks temporarily closing Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

Juveniles (like the one) tend to be more curious (vs aggressive) but this decision was made for the safety of both people and the lion.
