Rubberducking

Late in the night, after training and whatever else the court demands of them, they're taken to the King's workshop. They're sat down in the corner and left there while the King works.

If they were to expect anything, they would have expected to be the thing lying on the table, but that's not what happens the first time, or the second, or the third. If they were able to relax, they would.

They don't think, but if they did, they would conclude that the King brings them here for company. He mumbles and talks at them as he works on his machines.

"I used to be able to do this silently," he says, once, "I wonder if it's my mortal shell or my age."

The Vessel has no opinions on the matter. They sit in their place like a good doll the King can talk to without being answered. It seems to help him a great deal—sometimes he paces around the workshop, musing over some problem outloud, before arriving at a conclusion and dashing over to the table to get back to work.

It's nice. If The Vessel was to feel anything, they would feel special.

They don't.
