Charlotte Brontë would approve of this novel, which stays true to her classic "Jane Eyre", only telling the story from Edward Rochester's viewpoint. As "Jane Eyre" is a lifelong favourite of mine, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting her world. We follow Edward from age seven until his late thirties. I found his childhood years particularly poignant, as he was not a particularly loved child who was sent away to boarding school upon his eighth birthday.

"Windows" is a charming debut novel featuring vignettes of the shopkeepers of the small Scottish town of Linlithgow. There is to be a competition for window displays in the lead up time to Christmas. We meet several different shopkeepers and get a glimpse of their lives as they plan their displays. An over zealous councilwoman who organizes the competition. An elderly man who runs a toy shop.

Another title from my lengthy NetGalley backlist. Perhaps I had an intuition that this would not be a stellar read for me, hence waiting SO long to read it. Perhaps it was because this is the second book in the series and I have not read the first one? Perhaps it lost some essential integrity in the translation from German to English?
