"And for that reason, those artists who oppose the occupation and advocate for justice for Palestinians have been subjected to a cynical, pernicious censorship designed to severely narrow the scope of the stories they can tell."

Independent UN commission finds that’s Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza *since* October 7.

I won't forget the anger, sadness, stillness that hung in the room after the screening I attended in February. Documentaries like this need to be seen. A fantastic, insightful, complex story from Filipa on all that stands in the way of No Other Land and its rightful audience.

No Other Land, a documentary about Palestine, can be streamed in Europe, Australia, and elsewhere, but it remains unavailable on streaming platforms in Canada and the US. Here, @filipouris.bsky.social traces its tricky path to finding North American audiences: thewalrus.ca/no-other-land/

Critics have called the documentary No Other Land everything from antisemitic to Palestinian propaganda, leading to initial shutouts from festivals like Hot Docs. But local institutions and indie cinemas are taking a chance on the film—and it’s paying off. thewalrus.ca/no-other-land/

How does an #Oscar -winning doc reach audiences when it still lacks mainstream North American distribution? My latest for @thewalrus.ca looks at No Other Land, its winding road to Canadian audiences & the indie cinema programmers keeping vital stories alive.

In Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, telling the truth is a crime, and journalists are the criminals—especially women reporters. Once the backbone of the country’s journalism, 84 percent have been forced out of the profession entirely. thewalrus.ca/reporting-afghan...
