The Boy In The Diving Bell: out NOW https://song.link/TheBoyInTheDivingBell
Pinned
The Boy In The Diving Bell, out today. 17 tracks of psych alt-folk, tape loops, and acoustic laments. Made with a 1960s reel-to-reel, first takes, mistakes left in. Warts, bed-hair, yesterday’s breath.

On CD, vinyl, and download. Links in bio.

4 years ago, on a Scottish island with 500 inhabitants, I converted part of a 150-year-old, stone-built garden shed into a recording studio. It was cold. Very cold. 2 years ago, on a different Scottish island with 20,000 people, I built a spare-room home studio in an actual house. This is progress.

Leavedate is the 7th track from The Boy In The Diving Bell. Out last August. Simple indie-folk with an Elliott Smith vibe, double-tracked acoustic and vocals, recorded live in the studio.

To beat our robot overlords, let's make music that is deliberately irregular & defiantly human. Wonky, pitchy, mistake-ridden, glorious meat-made music.

The last two tracks for my next #album are done, out now for #Bandcamp subscribers flakebelly.bandcamp.com
Of What's Been Lost & Sensory Overload. Out in April. No nice vocals this time, I shouted, rapped, pitch-shifted, used computerised voices. Production is #lo-fi, crunchy, distorted. I like.

Smile Report is the 6th track from The Boy In The Diving Bell. Out last August. A first-take, do not edit too much, demo-leaning approach. End of the world harmonicas, three bass guitars. Unhinged, grimy, nasty. Involuntary commitment paperwork energy.

My album's finished. Took 8 months. Written, played and produced by me at home. And none of it makes me wince. This is progress.

All night mix session tonight. 2 songs left and the album's done. Let's chuck some tracks through this dusty old, mostly broken gear and see how hairy we can get it. See you on the other side.

Soul backing vocals that sound like they were sampled from a cassette you found at the dump? Don't mind if I do.

The last place I expected this song to go was all Bowie impersonation on the vocals. But the song decides!

Newspaper Stairs is the 5th track from The Boy In The Diving Bell. One of my favourites. Weird, analogue-leaning experimental funk with an outsider pop edge. Sounds like running down a flat 80s Amiga corridor with tape wobble and cheap synth bass.

Finishing off the last 2 songs for my next album. Out spring/summer. Scheming the next one. Compiling study material. I'm thinking long, long songs that flow into each other, no gaps, one continuous piece. The 3rd arc of a cycle, The Boy In The Diving Bell being the first. Stay tuned for part 2!

If you go on @kickstarter.com you'll quickly see that there is a choice between funding our latest LP/book, and funding a new Thundercats role-playing game. I know where my money's going, Lion-O.

In all seriousness - its the last few days, so please share!

Attachment Catastrophe, 8th track from the new album, out now for Bandcamp subscribers: flakebelly.bandcamp.com

Modal drones, backwards vocals, three bass guitars, dual lyrics, and a crunchy analogue mix. The sound of the end of your world.

The 4th track from my album The Boy In The Diving Bell is All About Her.

An acoustic folk song with guitar and vocals double tracked live. It’s really hard to keep both performances in time. This is the closest I’ve got. The intro drifts into bluegrass somehow.

The third track from The Boy In The Diving Bell is A Spy In The Ointment. It began as an #acoustic guitar sketch, then spread across a #keyboard #orchestra and finished by a #jazz drummer. The #drum solo still makes my toe curl up in my boot.

The 2nd song from my album The Boy In The Diving Bell is At The Prow of The Lifeboat. Acoustic guitar, strings, words, music, stuff. A lifetime of social missteps and unseen struggles. I suppose you could call it alt-folk. Or something.
