A black and white photograph of the hellmouth entrance of cabaret l’enfer. The novel title is Lazarus, written by Lukan Garrow The hallway opened like a throat. From the main room, hands appeared to take my coat, my hat. I let them, soothed by the cushioning darkness, given a velvet quality by the haze of smoke. From within this shroud came points of soft light; the low, controlled glow of an opium lamp. They scattered the murky room like dying stars. Amongst them, amongst the pillows and furs, lay piles of unmoving contorted flesh. Bodies on bodies. Limp, cast across one another careless. A mass grave. Their breath was soft, almost invisible, their half-closed eyes sucked into a drowning pool of dreaming. Atop a bunk lay a woman in repose, as if painted, her face turned from me, her hand hanging limp over the edge. This was a house of the dead. Its denizens never-living. All those years I had lived beneath the soil, in those cut, festering wells of misery and fear. It was here alone I could feel the soft embrace of the grave.

Paris, 192X. An English man without a face is hired by a strange boy to examine a series of defaced self portraits. His investigation leads him into a world of art, opium, sex, and the undead. It was a strange face; like a doll’s is strange; perfect, but hard and cold. The eyes had that same glassy sheen, too dark in the gloom to discern their colour. My gaze drifted over the porcelain apple-curve of his cheek, his hairless chin. Purple hooks beneath his eyes made it look as if he hadn’t slept for weeks. His lips, bitten red, gleamed in the lamplight. I felt heat rise in my cheeks and swallowed the knot in my throat. The scent of him was overpowering, stinging. Roses on roses on roses — a vast mound of them, crushed, weeping, rotting. Turned, a glass of wine left in the sun to gather flies. It crept through me like embalming fluid. “Yes, it is you,” he murmured. He moved his hand as if to reach out and touch my face. I took an instinctive step back, alarmed, and he withdrew; but not before I spied the jewelled rings heavy on his slim fingers, the curated almond shape of his pointed nails. And the skin, so impossibly pale, as if he’d never seen a lick of sunlight. He smiled. The teeth were perfectly white, but crooked. “My friends told me I might find you here.”
