A key part of the oppression of LGBTQ+ folks in the past was simply withholding knowledge- about these identities, that there were others out there like you, that these were things that you can do with your body. It would be extremely difficult to go back to that (though of course not impossible).

I hadn't read that article before, but I think that if I were an author on the level of Atwood, someone saying I'm "up there with Rowling in storytelling ability" would be getting punched.

Yes! It's always bothered me when conservatives would make NewSpeak comparisons talking about pronouns or "new genders." Like, no, the entire point of NewSpeak was to make certain thoughts impossible by getting rid of words for them. Creating new words to name new ideas is the exact opposite.

I was exactly as trans as I am now when I was 10 years old. The fact that I didn't have words for those feelings, or a context for the way in which I thought of myself differed from the way others did, did not change that.

This attitude is why Democrats are continually losing ground. It puts Dems as unable to *do* anything, only react to Republicans as defense.
