🌍 Hello, Bluesky! We’re Global Footprint Network. We track humanity’s demand on nature versus what Earth can regenerate. You might know us from #EarthOvershootDay — the date when we’ve used up nature’s budget for the year. Spoiler: It’s always way too early.

Earth Overshoot Day over time
July 24th is Earth Overshoot Day this year. Carbon emissions continue to be the largest contributor pushing the Ecological Footprint further above the planet’s annual budget
overshoot.footprintnetwork.org
footprintnetwork.bsky.social
This #overshoot occurs because people emit more CO₂ than the biosphere can absorb, use more freshwater than is replenished, harvest more trees than can regrow, fish quicker than stocks replenish, etc.
This overuse beyond what nature can renew inevitably depletes Earth’s natural capital.
footprintnetwork.bsky.social
Today is #EarthOvershootDay.
Falling on July 24th means that humanity is currently using nature 1.8 times faster than Earths ecosystems can regenerate.

By this Thursday, 24 July, humanity will have used more from nature than Earth can regenerate in a year. That means we’re living as if we had 1.8 planets & pushing well past nature’s limits.
footprintnetwork.bsky.social
In ten days, we are in #overshoot. We will have used up nature’s entire annual budget of ecological resources and services.

Population Solution - #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day
Is it helpful to discuss population? We have compiled a range of viewpoints and additional assessments from people around the world.

In recognition of #WorldPopulationDay, we’re taking a closer look at one of the key solutions in our Power of Possibility resource: population.

Is it okay to talk about population? We think it’s essential to #EndOvershoot.

Uruguay stands out as a relative sustainability leader, showcasing how national policies and lifestyles can shift a country’s Overshoot Day much closer to the year’s end. Yet even this commendable position reminds us that global balance requires more than just barely enough.

Reminder: #EarthOvershootDay falls on July 24 this year!

Fun Fact: Uruguay has the latest Overshoot Day in the world—December 17—the only one that falls in December this year! Its per capita ecological footprint is comparatively small.

Our founder, met today with Vice President Carolina Cosse, who is currently serving as acting president in the absence of President Orsi (Uruguay). Their discussion focused on the growing importance of biocapacity in a predictable future shaped by climate change and increasing resource constraints.

If the problem is to be solved by humanely reducing birthrates instead of suffering increasing death rates, we must move immediately. Reducing birthrates takes time, but the history of reproductive change has demonstrated that empowerment of girls and women in society is key,

“Our global population is already well above what is sustainable in even the medium term, as Earth Overshoot Day makes perfectly clear. 🧵

Population threatens to destabilize our ecosystems & societies alike. The longer we delay the discussion, the more devastating our legacy will be.
It’s an uncomfortable subject, fraught with racist & classist undertones, but it must be discussed nonetheless.” #WorldPopulationDay

Genevieve Tarino challenges the notion that talking about population is “anti-human”:

“I’d say that it is anti-human not to discuss population.
