3 Spoopy/10 - Wier melting into the shadows saying, 'I am home' - goosebumps.
3 ickie squckie/10 - It's too jank to be squicked for long.
5 GOOD/10 - Acceptable in it's own way. There was a vision I think that got lost on the cutting room floor and we're left with the eyeless corpse of a film.

The shit-in-HD effects rapidly pull you our of the tension (greetings to Jaws).

Does it have some tension? Yeah. Some good horror? yeah. But the plot is all but lost. You don't care who is hallucinating what because at this point just let me see how you kill everyone. That's more exciting.

for me, scale.

Laurence Fishburne? Given garbage, made gold.

Sam Neill? Told be creepy, was damn creepy.

Something is missing though. The crew feels.. forced, and less naturally a group (better in Alien). The science feels like it breaks it's own rules (hello, The Fly).

#11 - Event Horizon (1997)

Okay coming off the back of The Fly, this is gonna sound weird, but me and science fiction do not mesh, and I think it's the particular brand of space-science that just kills me. More science than fiction? Passu.

Event Horizon is on that side of the too much science

"Sorry, I can't go out. I have plans."

The plans:
#TheUntamed/ #CQL
A pic of the legs and left hand of a woman from above, sitting on a fluffy bed in a cosy atmosphere with a soft light, some snacks and a drink around her, a laptop in front of her with an edited in pic of Wei Wuxian (actor Xiao Zhan) and Lan Wangji (actor Wang Yibo) in white Gusu Lan robes in The Untamed/ CQL after the Ice cave scene, fallen on top of each other, hand tied with Lan Wangji's headband. A caption above the laptop reads:

"Sorry, I can't go out. I have plans."

3 Spoopy/10 - It's got its moments but..
7 ickie squckie/10 - GRUB. ABORTION. GRUBORTION.
8 GOOD /10 - It's a fantastic movie with a fantastic cast and fantastic music. The pacing is a lean, mean, allegory-for-aging-machine.
forgivenlilies.bsky.social
Squicky? You got it.

The ...evolution... of Brundlefly gets significantly worse in every scene... AND THEN THERES THE GRUBORTION???

It's got some of that good 80s magic that makes a movie so good. It's content in telling exactly one story.

#10 The Fly (1986)

Okay so we've found the thing that starts to really squick me out and it's body horror. Be very afraid indeed.

Phenomenal insanity from Jeff Goldblum as the Brundlefly, and actually gut wrenching terror responses from Geena Davis.

1 Spoopy/10 - It's too funny to really have anything. Mild discomfort at best.
2 ickie squckie/10 - There's some good organ eating and wounds that are real good!
8 GOOD /10 - It's fun. It's an easy rewatch. There's Queen! I think it's a good background movie. Nothing too hard going on.
forgivenlilies.bsky.social
It's got just enough gore / scare to give an unsettling setting!

And now on rewatch, I can see where it pulls from other horror comedy that comes before it. It's really quite a good mix!!

I will say that once they get to the Winchester, it drags a smidge. Maybe something got scrapped there. idk.

#9 - Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Take car, go to Mum's, kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all this to blow over.

I know we shouldnt say the z word but it's one of my favorite zombie films. It's funny! It's dramatic! It's a romcom!

4 Spoopy/10 - It had some good creepy moments!!
5 ickie squckie/10 - Blood and wounds are done well, but the werewolves ripping off their skin to reveal blood-mat fur? Ohhhhh gross!
6 GOOD /10 - Enjoyable. Hallmark holiday, even. Nothing wrong with that.
forgivenlilies.bsky.social
of tension. Each character/arc/point of view is pretty short, and while it naturally bleeds into another story quite well, it's premium ingredients on wonder bread.
forgivenlilies.bsky.social
blink and you miss it kind of drops - one character, while talking about her sister goes 'mom always said she was the runt of the litter'

...surprise, they're werewolves.

Speaking of, DAMN some of the best werewolf transformation scenes I've seen in a while!!

In cons, there wasn't a lot

#8 - Trick 'r Treat (2007)

A jump into something more modern, and a film I haven't seen.

It's got a real unique way of storytelling - point of view swaps, plus order of events fuckery. It's ...

fun!

I feel like this is something I'd want to watch because there's a few

1 Spoopy/10 - Everything about the film is funny.
7 ickie squckie/10 - For 30 year old gore, it is damn gory. It's buckets of gore. But it's also squishy organs and its ICKIE. I did have to look away a few times in the beginning.
8 GOOD /10 - A horror/comedy like no other. A great film.
