The "solution" @jay.bsky.team suggests cheerfully ignores the reality that most people do not have the resources or the skills to build their own platform, AT protocol or not.

A fact that Jay is probably well aware of, and is simply choosing to omit for the sake of skirting responsibility.

Trans users are not unreasonable for asking Bluesky leadership to protect them from bigotry, nor are they unreasonable for asking leadership to actually enforce Bluesky's policies. Trans users should not have to go and build an entirely new platform just because one person refuses to do her job.

This is a common cop-out you'll see come from Bluesky leadership whenever there is frustration or anger coming from their users. It's a reasonable suggestion when it comes to users asking for things like site features, but when it comes to basic community safety, it is not.

That is very telling to me both in terms of how likely at-risk sites think this law is to stand for long (not super likely) and just how willing Bluesky's leadership is to bend the knee to fascism and Christian Nationalists (frighteningly willing).

Not even Pornhub (who is supposedly the one actually being targeted by this law) requires using a VPN to get around age verification... because as far as I can tell they haven't implemented anything.

So @bluesky is a porn site under yet another vague Republican law snuck into the OH budget! My DMs were hostage TODAY, Sept 29 unless I verified.
MEANWHILE the deadline for Congressional redistricting to revise unconstitutional maps is also TOMORROW & Republicans haven’t presented a map yet.

On Bluesky’s app today even though the law doesn’t go into effect until tomorrow:

“The laws in your location require you to verify you're an adult to access certain features. Tap to learn more.”

My DMs disappeared until verification was confirmed.

Bc corrupt Ohio Republicans pretend fighting “porn” is a top priority for voters and rule this state as rabid tyrants:

Yep. They snuck it into the latest state budget bill. Officially goes into effect tomorrow but it seems Bluesky is rolling out changes to Ohio users tonight

This is something they're already blatantly doing with their upcoming TOS changes, so it wouldn't surprise me if their overcompliance with these age verification laws serves a similar aim.
