I thought I’d share the story behind my Genius Loci Digest, which is more than just a travel diary. After a breakdown in my 30s, it became a salve—helping me untangle anxiety, find solace, and move forward by connecting deeply with the places around me. 🌿 #Thread
✨From the archives: St Mary’s, Breamore in Hampshire, is one of the most complete late Anglo-Saxon churches we have — a building that’s held its ground for over a millennium. Here I photographed it with the Elizabethan Breamore House behind it, two eras folded into one view.

✨A bit of warmth and light for the darker and wetter days.

John Ruskin described Lincoln Cathedral as “out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles.”

The view from the castle is truly otherworldly, rising above the city. #thread

✨Inside the medieval roof timbers at Beverley Minster, Yorkshire, one of the rafters has been dated (c. 921) and was a sapling during the reign of King Æthelstan, before England was an entity.
Touch it and you feel a kind of altitude and sense that the past is cheek by jowl.

Sunday Read (📸 my art): "In the journey from moor to crypt, from macrocosm to microcosm, the land gathers the wider story; the crypt concentrates it. And somewhere between the two, I’m reminded that we are not separate from the places we walk through." 👉 www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshal...

✨ A few years back I stood outside Wells Cathedral for a full day and photographed the impact of the light on the front facade. I was amazed at the outcome - at how a single entity could morph and change under the changing light. 🌅 #thread

✨ Breathtaking beauty. One of my favourite pockets of space - the organic and arborous 🪾C13th chapter house at Lincoln Cathedral. 📸 taken with my tilt shift lens.

🌍🪐✨ St. Mary Lastingham, Yorks - out of this world.

"This place - the journey to it, the aura, the echoes, the muted light, the Saxon remnants and the Romanesque - has lifted my anxious self into a more rooted sense of the world."

😯 ✨St John’s Court in Malmesbury: a 17th-century almshouse wrapped around a stunning 12th-century doorway from a former chapel. One of the most characterful gables in the country.

🌞 I spent a day watching the light dance across Wells Cathedral and folded it into one image.
Download the hi-res file, frame it your way, or gift it to someone who’ll feel that same awe.
A simple way to support a working creative and share some beauty. 🤗

I think I'd cycle 80 miles in a headwind to see Ely Cathedral. No other cathedral feels so organically grown from the earth itself - it's lantern tower is one of the most verdant wonders of the medieval world. #thread
