I thought I’d share the story behind my Genius Loci Digest, which is more than just a travel diary. After a breakdown in my 30s, it became a salve—helping me untangle anxiety, find solace, and move forward by connecting deeply with the places around me. 🌿 #Thread

The striking form of Howden Minster, Yorkshire. Dating mostly from the 14th century, the building suffered the loss of its choir roof in the C17th. Its grandeur is a lasting reminder of the Minster’s historic ties to the powerful bishops of Durham.
The ruined east end of Howden Minster in Yorkshire, framed by a clear blue sky. A vast Gothic arch dominates the view, with tracery fragments clinging to weathered stone. Gravestones scatter the green churchyard, while the intact tower rises beyond. A modern stone sculpture stands to the right.

Look up The Bestiary - some stories in there.

Sorry to hear that - they've always been open when I visited. So glad I can share them with you, Tamsin

Looking from outside through the porch at St Michael’s Church, Upton Cressett, soft light leads the eye towards the medieval chancel beyond, with its window and worn plaster.

✨When I first stood with camera and tripod at St Michael’s, Upton Cressett, I lost the urge to press the shutter — spending a divine half hour simply watching light drift over the arc of the chancel arch. Here's the view of what I saw...
Sunlight pours through a narrow lancet window at St Michael’s Church, Upton Cressett, illuminating the simple altar and patterned floor beneath a dramatic Norman chancel arch.

✨Every now and then, on my travels, the light reveals unexpected beauty - here, unusually, the story of Samson is compressed between triumph over the lion and Delilah cutting his hair with shears - quite magnificent in the raking light at @York_Minster . A treasure worth seeing.

It’s such a lovely way to experience it, John.

Coventry is one of my favourite cathedrals - the connection between old and new. Thanks Sue.

They each have their different qualities, Sue. Both magnificent.

It does have a magnificent view from the car and train.

Detail of painted Norman capitals in St George’s, Hampnett, with volute carvings, zigzag motifs, and red-ochre linework echoing medieval fresco patterns across the church interior.

I think these are the finest pair of C12th jamb shafts I've seen, with a delightful carving of two doves at St. George, Hampnett, Gloucestershire. Paint work is of 1871 by the incumbent under the guidance of Clayton and Bell. Has a Byzantine feel.
Close-up of a painted Romanesque capital in St George’s, Hampnett, showing two carved birds with interlocking heads drinking from a shared bowl, symbolising unity and faith.

This is such a hidden gem: the C12th Romanesque chancel at St. George in Hampnett, Gloucestershire. I’ll let the photograph do the talking… #thread
Interior of St George’s Church, Hampnett, Gloucestershire: richly painted Norman chancel with geometric wall patterns, arched ceiling, tiled floor, and an altar lit by stained glass.

Most welcome, Nina - I think this time of year is the best time to visit.
