Chronic Crooner

It isn’t hard to find Red-winged Blackbirds with their beaks open, #singing for mates and putting rivals on notice.

This guy has assumed a classic pose, sideways on a stick, that exposes both of his fabulous red and yellow epaulets.

Tiny Mouthfuls

#FeedingTime is nearly all the time when you’re a tiny Tufted Titmouse and your diet includes seeds and nuts so small you have to hold them steady with your ancient-looking feet.

Sticking the Landing

The early morning #WinterLight highlights this male Eastern Bluebird ’s plumage as he keeps his wing and tail feathers extended until he’s sure he can hold onto an icy perch.

Double Buffleheads

These Bufflehead Ducks are not only #TwoOfAKind, but of one mind as their water play appears synchronized.

You Go First!

A couple of Cedar Waxwings found these branches above our bird bath to be the #PerfectPerch for diving.

Armored Up

Brown-headed Cowbirds, an aggressive species that parasitizes other birds’ nests, have #ShortBeaks that look armor-plated and oversized for their heads.

This guy just finished polishing his steely weapon on a twig. What’s that beak made of?

Linthead

“Yes, that’s a little piece of string on my head. That is MY string. Don’t touch it! And don’t retouch it.”

This Cooper’s Hawk landed on our fence & I shot from my door. Zooming in, I spied the foreign fiber.

The #raptor declined my offer of a comb.

Lightening Liftoff

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird leads with its #LongBeak during liftoff from a branch.

This quick bird executed a 180-degree turn from the direction it was sitting on the branch between my shutter bursts.

I Work Alone

On a cold February day, this Red-shouldered Hawk perched for a long time in #solitude, finding no prey on the ground or in the air.

Landing Gear Down

#HouseFinches are difficult to capture as #BirdsInFlight, but I caught this one coming in for a landing at our birdbath.

Winters at Sea

Atlantic Puffins swim in rain and frigid water a dozen miles off St. John’s, Newfoundland, showing how well adapted they are to their #natural environment.

Puffins breed from late April to August on islands but spend the non-breeding season at sea.

Mr. Cranky Pants

To my eye, Eastern Bluebirds naturally have #MoodyFaces, making me wonder about the whole “Bluebird of Happiness” thing. More like “resting Bluebird face.” (Credit my son for that one.)

This guy seems a bit annoyed by the winter weather.

Hey, Where Ya Going?

This shot highlights the lovely #FeathersAndForm of the Eastern Bluebird from behind, both at rest and flying. Surprising wingspan!

Undersized Overachiever

Among birds with #ShortBeaks, few are more diminutive than the Tufted Titmouse, also my #BirdoftheDay yesterday with an acorn jabbed on the tip.

Carrying nuts this way seems close to tool use, but a body part doesn’t really count.

Nut on a Skewer

This Tufted Titmouse employs a classic move to transport an acorn.

Titmice often skewer their #FoodFinds on their bill’s upper tip, holding it steady with the lower mandible.

Is the Bird Half Black or Half White?

I’ve always thought of Dark-eyed Juncos as the #BlackAndWhite cookies of birds.

Also known as Half-Moon cookies or Amerikaners in Germany, they are dipped halfway in vanilla frosting, and the other half in chocolate.

Like a Spotted Fur Coat

Few birds boast more #speckles&spots than Northern Flickers, but their camo is useless on bare trees in winter.

This puffed-up flicker looks like it’s wearing a spotted fur coat—or maybe an everything bagel.

Heard Before Seen

You usually hear the long trill of Chipping #Sparrows before you see them.

These two illustrate how well camouflaged they are on pine straw.

Maybe why most of my sparrow photos are adults perching on branches.

This female House Finch’s drinks came served on a mirror.

An Autofocus Win in the Wind!

Sudden gusts forced this Red-shouldered Hawk down in a tangle of limbs #branchingout all around.

With branches and bird swaying, I set my shutter to 1/1250, and waited for the AF box to collapse on an eye. Credit tech + luck.

Distinctive Derrière

On a hiking trail in Denali National Park, this Spruce Grouse displayed its backside and hairy legs while trotting ahead of us.

As #BirdButts go, this is one of the most distinctively adorned that I’ve seen.
