I haven't really thought of "the HWI system" as like, a thing I could reuse. It's such a bespoke thing for the mood of that specific game. But could I do it? Would people enjoy me using it again? Let me know I am genuinely curious

This is the player character model/box in Thief: The Dark Project
November 24, 2025 at 8:16 PM
An item a player can't use proactively or trigger on their own are not great to put on a player's sheet, and can cause forgetfulness for the GM. Let player items mostly be proactively used and triggered, not passive or dependent on stuff only the GM knows. The end
November 24, 2025 at 7:33 PM
Does that mean that these items don't work? No, but if you the GM give an item like this to the player, *keep it in your notes.* Make a post-it for your screen or whatever. Also don't make it the only thing the item does, because it doesn't engage the player in any way.
November 24, 2025 at 7:31 PM
compare a design that's more like "when you throw this item, it will always return to your hand." This is something the player will have written on their sheet and can remember. Consider a GM mechanics like "and every 10 minutes, roll for an encounter." The cognitive load rests appropriately.
November 24, 2025 at 7:31 PM
in theory this is a cool magical item in a ttprg to give to a player, but consider the following: if you as a GM give it to a *player*, it's still on *you the GM* to remember to activate it despite it being marked on the *player's sheet*. You've just mixed player mechanics with GM mechanics.
November 24, 2025 at 7:31 PM
I want to talk about player-front VS GM front mechanics in ttrpgs and why mixing them isn't a great idea via the medium of Sting, the sword from the Hobbit that glows when goblins are near:

I'm dead serious. Three Cueing / Balanced Literacy doesn't teach letters, or words, or phonetics
November 24, 2025 at 5:08 PM
And we aren't even teaching *letters* to kids anymore
November 24, 2025 at 4:03 PM
Maybe stop me if you've heard this one but it might have more to do with how kids aren't being, you know. Taught how to read.
November 24, 2025 at 3:48 PM
A weird amount of "literacy is dying" youtubers are blaming critical thinking lmao
