Meet Andji, our warrior spirit. 💚After arriving as an orphan in 2021, he became known for his bold personality.

Now 4, he’s graduated to one of Lola's forested groups and has bonded with Semendwa, the group’s matriarch, a beautiful milestone on his journey.

Happy Birthday to our founder, Claudine André! 🎂

Her wish? That people talk about bonobos “so they get to know them... We have only one planet and we are all responsible for it.”

Share her story!

Every rescued baby bonobo begins here in the nursery at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary. With love, care, and your support, they'll grow strong enough to join a sanctuary group and then return to the wild at Ekolo ya Bonobo Community Reserve.

🌕 Three beautiful souls, three haunted journeys, one shared sanctuary.

Emongo, Djeka, and Lombo have endured more than any baby should. But in the nursery, they play like imps, feast like goblins, and learn to trust like witches in a coven.

In the nursery, the orphans grow stronger and closer. Lombo and Lenda are learning to climb, swing, and play together — practice for the life skills they’ll need to be returned to the wild someday!

Kenge arrived in April, too weak to walk or cling. Covered in rashes and barely one year old, he needed constant care and focused attention.

Thanks to Mama Niclette’s devotion, Kenge is slowly growing stronger each day.

We can already see his personality is coming out!

Dr. Goodall's influence reached across species and generations. In 2010, she visited Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary with our founder Claudine André, sharing in the hope for bonobos’ future. Recently, she supported Claudine's nomination for an award, calling her “the unsung heroine of bonobo conservation.”

In 2021, scientists discovered two wild female bonobos adopted infants from other social groups, the first case of such an adoption found in #greatapes.
This rare act of cross-group adoption shows just how strong female bonds are in bonobo society!

Bonobos use tools just like early humans! In the wild, they’ve been seen cracking nuts, using sticks to dig for food, and even wielding stone tools.

This ability was once thought unique to humans and chimpanzees, but #bonobos proved that wrong! 💡

Meet Kamina! A New Arrival at Lola ya Bonobo 💚

Please welcome Kamina, a bold and curious 3-year-old bonobo rescued from Lodja, in Sankuru Province. Like many victims of the illegal wildlife trade, Kamina was kept as a pet—but now she’s safe and sound at Lola ya Bonobo.
