Toads on Roads is one of Froglife’s most under-funded projects, yet it saves thousands of toads every year.

Donations help support volunteers, manage data and reduce wildlife road deaths.

A 1958 Ladybird illustration of the viper (adder) and common lizard.

From heathlands to moorlands, these reptiles rely on warm, open habitats — many of which are now under threat.

Protecting places protects species.

Another 2 ponds were maintained recently to open them up for newt breeding areas, newt surveys & training courses at Hampton Nature Reserve.

Thanks to the dedicated volunteers involved.

Spotted at Froglife’s Eye Green Nature Reserve 🌳

These ‘hugging’ trees might be inosculating—where trunks fuse like grafting.

Unlike pleaching (done by people), these two embraced naturally. If tree-hugging’s good for us… maybe it’s good for trees too?

Our #LondonBlueChain team restored Albion Millennium Green pond in Forest Hill recently.

Despite cold, wet weather, they removed silt, replaced the liner, replanted the pond and created new habitats using on-site materials.

Over 15 frogs were spotted hopping back in!

Our #GreenTalent team, with the help of some passionate volunteers, attempted to remove a fridge from the lake at Eye Green NR!

Unfortunately, additional tools were needed & some waders, so they didn’t quit manage it. However, they did manage to remove a lot of other surrounding litter.

From a Ladybird book first published in 1958.

This book certainly reflects its time, even suggesting grass snakes make good pets!

Today we know grass snakes belong in the wild, not our homes.

#DYK some species can hybridise?

The edible frog is a fertile hybrid of marsh and pool frogs. Introduced newts could also threaten great crested newts with hybridisation.

A common hybrid we do see? Greylag × Canada geese—like this bird near our Peterborough reserve.

At Hampton Nature Reserve, eagle-eyed volunteer, Peter, spotted a Water Vole feeding station on a log.

This log was in a reed scallop the team had cut the week before, so their maintenance aimed at great crested newts hasn't deterred this furry friend's activity.

Winter pond work is no easy task! On the #LondonBlueChain project, the team has battled ice, torrential rain and a lot of mud.

Despite the conditions, they’ve delivered school sessions, workshops and pond restoration across South London.

Here are some of their muddiest moments this season.

Every spring, common toads cross dangerous roads to reach breeding ponds. Many don’t survive.

Your donations help Froglife keep Toads on Roads running and protect local toad populations one tiny life at a time.

At the Peterborough Neighbourhood Wildlife Corridor project, the team have been conducting an experiment to see which bird feeders are more effective in schools across Peterborough.

We think the seeds have it- apart from 1 school where the squirrels had taken the cones as well as everything else!

Last call to vote for the Eglinton Hill wildlife pond: https://ow.ly/ovfg50Y9WTO

In busy urban Greenwich, a new pond would support frogs, toads, birds and insects—boosting biodiversity where it’s needed most.

Help this vital nature refuge thrive.

Back in October, two Froglife projects, #LondonBlueChain & Peterborough #GreenTalent, dug a new clay-lined pond at Roots4Life in Greenwich.

The London team returned recently to find it full of rainwater and with toads on site. They'll be back soon to plant it up for spring.

Our #BostonAndBeyond team were back at The Community Growers CIC lining & planting the pond in the children’s wellbeing garden.

From muddy trenches & a full refill, everyone got stuck in!

thanks Lincolnshire Community Foundation & #NationalLottery players for making it possible.

Over the past few weeks, our #BostonAndBeyond team have been inspiring Cubs, Beavers & Scouts to support native #amphibians and #reptiles.

Using LEGO wildlife gardens, young environmentalists explored how ponds, log piles & hibernacula can make a real difference at home.

Conservation students from Capel Manor College teamed up with our #LondonBlueChain team earlier this month to restore a pond at Roots4Life in Greenwich.

Cutting back overgrown bulrushes to let light back in and boost biodiversity.

Work continues soon!

The rain has temporarily stopped our #GreenTalent team working at Boardwalks Nature Reserve.

Some of the ponds have joined the paths! But the dead hedge they created is holding strong!

With the rain coming in horizontaly last week, our usual session at Hampton Lakes Primary was indoors.

This didn't stop us having fun learning about the frog lifecycle, creating 'superhero toads' and playing a game where we had to catch the slugs and flies with our frog tongues!
