Governor Kathy Hochul today declared a State of Emergency for eight counties across southern New York after urging New Yorkers to continue to prepare as a strong coastal storm is set to impact much of New York beginning Sunday afternoon. The State of Emergency includes the Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk and Westchester Counties as well as counties contiguous to those eight.

WCTU Cleveland 13 News: Antavia Kennibrew, who shared the details of the incident on Facebook, said her daughter, Amarie, was staying with a family member near East 145th Street and St. Clair Avenue on September 13 while Kennibrew underwent a medical procedure. According to Kennibrew’s account, Amarie left the home and was approached by three older boys, believed to be ages 8, 9 and 10; who lured her into a nearby field.

C-SPAN: Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) held a press conference on day 10 of a government shutdown. They urged five Democrats to "have a backbone" and help pass the continuing resolution to open up the government. When asked about talking with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) over the next few days, Leader Thune said, " I think Leader Schumer is checked out...I think this is going to happen organically with enough reasonable Senate Democrats who care enough about doing the right thing for their country..." In addition, they answered reporters' questions on potentially removing the Senate filibuster option and passing bills through a simple majority, military pay, health care tax credits, and reducing government spending.

C-SPAN: The first lady said she and Russian President Putin had open communication about the reunification of Ukrainian children in Russia. She announced that eight children, impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war, had been reunified with their families during the last 24 hours.

C-SPAN: At a U.S. attorney's office in Tampa, Florida, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that a man was charged in connection to a threatening letter that conservative commentator Benny Johnson received. She condemned acts of political violence in the wake of recent high profile assassinations such as conservative commentator, Charlie Kirk, and former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband. Bondi was joined by U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida Gregory Kehoe and Benny Johnson himself. 

C-SPAN: Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis and other officials brief reporters on a deadly blast that leveled an explosives plant near Nashville, Tennessee. Several people are missing or presumed dead.

Calls for the Death Penalty for Teachers Union Chief GPAHE: In April 2023, Jeremy Carl, a senior fellow at the Project 2025-supporting Claremont Institute, posted a message on X about Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “If the U.S. were a serious nation,” Carl wrote, “Weingarten would be tried for crimes against America’s children and would get the death penalty.” Weingarten, who is openly gay and Jewish, had become a target of conservative anger over COVID school closures.

C-SPAN: House Speaker Mike Johnson took viewers' calls on the government shutdown, now in its ninth day. The speaker was pressed on several issues, including bringing the House back to pay the troops, extending health care subsidies, and the Epstein files.

C-SPAN: House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) spoke to reporters on day 9 of a government shutdown. He continued to call on Republicans to meet and negotiate in good faith on reopening the government. Jeffries expressed support for a standalone bill to pay members of the military during the shutdown, but continued to press soon-expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies as his party's main concern when discussing negotiations.
