#UKteenchat Read widely is my no one recommendation. Not just what's in now, but the works that inspired contemporary writers. Go back in history, understand the context. If you can, read translated works as well. A whole world of different points of view awaits.

#UKteenchat I'm in the process of writing another novel in the same series as BINDING THE CUCKOO.
It's all stand-alones, but within the same social group, and with the same running theme of women hiding their true identity. The mythics liberation movement is also slowly gathering pace.

#UKteenchat I love working in cafes, especially if a friend can join me. Makes the process less lonely, more collaborative.
Especially with BINDING THE CUCKOO, I felt that a Gilded Age romance demanded a fancy cake and coffee to accompany its creation. All about the aesthetics 😂

#UKteenchat I'm a complete pantser for the first 1/3 of the book.
I usually begin with an image, or a poem.
BINDING THE CUCKOO began with two letters: sycophantic, wheedling, somewhat manipulative. I giggled the whole way through writing them.
The story tends to grow from there.

#UKteenchat My YT channel, THE GABRIELA HOUSTON PROJECT, explores how storytelling is a crucial part of everyone's life and many professions, more than we usually give credence to. I interviewed many artists, researchers, journalists, even a cult expert. It's been such an enriching experience

#UKteenchat It was always my favourite era: not just for the fabulous aesthetic of it, but for the sheer energy that permeated that time. The beginnings of women's suffrage movement, the stirrings of social conscience that finally began to address the plight of domestic workers, the science!

#UKteenchat Ofc! I studied the Fin de Siecle movements at uni, but when writing an (alternative) historical novel, I had to pay special attention to the everyday things: food, clothes etc. I did a fair bit of research into the social movements that inspired the narrative as well.

#UKteenchat BINDING THE CUCKOO is a Gilded Age historical romantasy, inspired by the early suffrage and domestic worker rights’ movement (with elements of folklore ofc). It's set in a world where we have found a way to pull creaturers of folklore—mythics— into our world and bind them to serve us.
1, Could you tell us a little bit about your new book, Binding the Cuckoo, please? @gabrielahouston.bsky.social #ukteenchat #bindingthecuckoo

Was watching some foreign tv series on Netflix recently and at first I was shown the English-audio version.
I was thinking, WTF is this awful dubbing, and just switched to original audio
But then I googled it and it’s AI! Explains the soulless quality of the audio tbh, but how disgusting!

A recent read for me, Binding the Cuckoo - evocative & enchanting, sharp & filled with mystery, oozing with folklore & magic, with characters to root for, in a world reflective of modern day issues. A vivid & magical tale of love, betrayal, loyalty & survival, beautifully told.

Binding the Cuckoo is a love story set in an alternative-history Gilded Age London.
But it’s also a story of women trying to help and lift each other up. Women supporting women is kinda my jam ❤️

#QOTD what’s your fav women-helping-women book?

Wooing the Witch Queen by @stephanieburgis.bsky.social is a cosy, humorous romp of a fantasy romance.
Light and witty, it keeps you turning the pages just to see what delight awaits next.

I’ve already preordered book 2!

QoTD: what fantasy creature would you be in the court of the witch queen?

I wish professional writing was a bit more like in the 20s, where if you got a short story published, you could support your whole family for a few months.

Meanwhile I’m here, on my 5th novel, trying to understand Facebook ads

Anyway, please look, please buy, please enjoy.

I’m so dispirited by the number of „authors” in private FB groups, who regularly discuss using AI to write/edit/illustrate books. Then debate whether it should even be required to inform the readers.

So there’s no doubt: Binding the Cuckoo is written & illustrated by myself

I’m a member of a couple self publishing groups on Facebook, and I’m so dispirited by the sheer volume of pro AI comments.
There’s so many who think nothing of publishing AI-written, AI-illustrated slop.

Just FYI, no AI was used in the creation of Binding the Cuckoo.
All me (and editors).
