I can't remember if it was one of the designers of pokemon or just people pointing it out but truly so much of an artists personality and choice is over what pose they decide for their pokemon sprite when it's 2D.

When it's 3D it's pretty much, having to just stand there. Idle.

There's a real fun aspect to pixel art that I have to assume has been talked about but the notion that a lot of pixel art is abstract art to imply much more than what's possible.

But on the other side is pixel art that is 100% what you see is what is intended. It's pretty fascinating.

Also of course when you have a 160x144 view port, that's quite a lot of space to traverse!

I remember reading an article about cutting out "dead" space in Pokemon towns and the results created kind of, super condensed layouts that whilst easier to traverse ended up losing a lot of breathing space.

I always love the GBA (and DS) gave pixel artists a safe haven to continue the craft. Feels like a bunch of snes devs got to still carry on their skills!
