How do Aussie Premier League fans survive? The Arsenal-Spurs game was at 3 30 AM Aus time. There was obviously no sleeping before that. Too much adrenaline after that. And then it was morning, and I hadn’t slept a wink ahead of a whole Monday of teaching. And you go through this every weekend???

I love everything about this piece by @gautambhatia88.bsky.social, and bonus is also learning about the Alter Magazine. Read it on a bigger screen, if you're able.

A bit late for the week - it was busy - but here’s the second November issue of Words for Worlds, the F-SF newsletter with an Indian slant.

feat. the secret history of Indian science fiction, reading (and loving) Stoner, Adrian Tchaikovsky, and more.

If you enjoyed this piece, then a quick note to say that I publish a free fortnightly newsletter called Words for Worlds, that covers, among other things, developments in the Indian SFF space: gautambhatia.substack.com

Good spot - it’s Melbourne’s botanical gardens but the flora is from Southern Africa.

Wow!

32) The Sentence by Gautam Bhatia. Most SFF is both ignorant of, and incurious about, plausible speculation about the law. The solution seems to be: get an excellent constitutional law scholar to write a very good SFF book centring the law. This is the Indian edition; coming out more widely in 2027.

That is entirely the work of the Climate Studio at Alt Carbon India!

It’s just not talked about very much! Trying to change all that now.

The folks at Alter Mag have done a brilliant job with this, turning it into an interactive essay with some stunning 3D graphics. Give it a look. 👇🏼
Finally out into the world, the labour of many months. My long essay in the inaugural edition of the Alter Magazine on the pasts, presents, and futures of Indian science fiction.

Early weekend mornings in Melbourne.

Not a bad vista to face when teaching.

after so long…

This month, I’ve taught two seminars (one undergrad, one grad), in two different countries, using Star Trek’s The Measure of a Man as a springboard.

I know there are a *lot* of criticisms of this episode, but just as a starting point for thinking and conversation, it is *so* generative.
Got some cutting-edge technology to play Star Trek in today’s classroom seminar. 😬

I hadn’t *planned* to read these two books together, but they’re turning out to be an excellently complementary pair.

Me to myself on landing in Melbourne: “Breathe the breathable air again, my friend.”
Spent the first leg of my Delhi-Melbourne flight with my throat feeling like someone was scraping it with nails, and my nasal cavity as if someone had spread tar over it. Just like all of last month.

When I land in MLB, I’ll take a moment, look at a blue sky, and *breathe* in the unpoisoned air.

Recently been re-reading Susan Marks’ A False Tree of Liberty. As a critical genealogy of human rights, it’s an unparalleled piece of work - should be read, taught, and debated a lot more!
