Gaviidae Sails
@gaviidaesails.com
Gaviidae is the Latin name for the Loon family, the state bird of Minnesota. We sail on Gaviidae, a 2003 Gozzard G41 sailboat currently in the Bahamas.
We sailed from Hopetown to Man-O-War Cay to attend a fund-raiser for the local school and explore the town.
Abacos – Man-O-War
Man-O-War Cay in the Abacos has its own unique charm, including being the only "dry" island in the Bahamas.

Our first couple of weeks in the Abacos include friends (old an new), turtles, music, excellent food, and beautiful waters.
The Abacos
Our introduction to the Abacos features everything a sailor could wish for - beautiful blue skies and aquamarine waters along with true island experiences.

The overall goal was getting Gaviidae to aquamarine water and palm trees. After three weeks of waiting for a good crossing window, our weatherman delivered.
Crossing the Stream
After three weeks waiting for a weather window, Dan and Julie aboard Gaviidae made it to the Abacos.

Early Sunday morning SV Shadow and SV Gaviidae (both Gozzard G41 sailboats) left Lynyard Cay in the Abacos bound for Eleuthera. The morning greeted us with a full rainbow and a quick sun shower. By mid-morning both boats were under sail with the engines off. Glorious! #gaviidaesails

The Dismal Swamp along the Intracoastal Waterway is anything but dismal! If you like a slower pace and lots of natural beauty - take the Swamp route!
The Intracoastal Waterway and the Dismal Swamp
We returned to Gaviidae, to continue our journey south to the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Setting off on November 12, we navigated numerous anchorages, and enjoyed camaraderie with fellow sailors. Our trip involved traversing the Great Dismal Swamp and ending with a delightful experience in Elizabeth City, NC.
