Ned culture, rituals and resistance: The enduring spectre of class in contemporary youth studies - Gavin Brewis, 2025

Interesting framing.

So, for MPs, who make c.£94k per year, low income is the reason for the corruption?

But when the poor, who struggle on around one-fifth of that amount, commit crime as a means for survival, it's inherent, and a matter of moral degradation?

Welcome to the class war.

A perfect example of the media’s role in preserving ruling‑class power and global hegemony. The deliberate obfuscation of facts here – what occurred and who was responsible – reconfigures 'common sense' around the issue, while redirecting attention toward a pre‑existing folk devil.

My doctoral thesis is now in the GCU Library. However, there is a two year restriction in place for various planned outputs and monograph.

For generations, communists have challenged the complete depravity of the upper and political classes. It was downplayed as "politics", or "conspiracy".

Knowing now of their deeds, do you still believe, the same political and economic system, actually serves YOU?

Buzzing for this new book by @graemearmstrong.bsky.social.

Remember him coming to my talk over at @glasgow.ac.uk and telling me all about it. So much time and work went into it (I've no idea how he is managing to do a PhD alongside it). But it sounded brilliant, and another cultural classic!

Murdering and gassing their own people? They've a history of it!

On 13th May 1985 in West Philadelphia, police laid siege to a rowhouse occupied by MOVE – a Black liberation group – trying to force them out. First the gunfire, then the tear gas, and then the unthinkable...

Non-conventional Burns Supper fusion dish.

For anyone interested, here's a wee overview. Very easy to make this.

Slow cooked Korean beef brisket (slow cooker). Simply add gochujang, honey, mirin, dark soy, light soy, toasted sesame oil, and a touch of oyster sauce and rub it all in then cook.

Is there, for honest poverty,
That hings his head, an' a' that?
The coward slave, we pass him by,
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Our toils obscure, an' a' that;
Yhe rank is but the guinea's stamp;
The man's the gowd for a' that

Saddened to hear about the death of Michael Parenti (1933–2026). A Marxist powerhouse whose work shaped critical understandings of class, ideology, and US imperial power, at times when it was dangerous to do so.

Hopefully all the boys and lassies who served, and the families of those who lost people, are now able to see what the Yank ruling classes and Trump think of you. Was it worth it?

No war but class war!
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

A pretty interesting conversation on this week's podcast, and I think a pretty clear throughline that racism, "skivers vs strivers" and for the queer community, transphobia are all weapons wielded by the ruling class to smash the working class.
In the latest episode of Nest of Fearties, Dr Gavin Brewis (@gavinbrewis.bsky.social) and Taj Ali (@tajali1.bsky.social) discuss the importance of class politics as support for Reform UK soars across Britain.

Police officers in Scotland are appealing to MSPs to have access to guns while on duty...

This is a terrible idea, not just because of what's happening in America, but because of what is happening here. 🧵

For those who are interested in criminology and the evolution of Glasgow’s 'gang culture' (not a concept I particularly like mind you), Small Faces (1996) is essential viewing. 🧵

A snippet of my thesis around the socialisation of harm embodied by moral enforcers.

Glasgow to USA, and across the world, such relations develop as a consequence of the same class antagonism.

If you see it once, you will never stop seeing it. The curse and the blessing of class consciousness.

Last night, Trump's America bombed Caracas, Venezuela.

This is a horrific act of war that signals wider problems globally. For anyone who doesn't know, Venezuela are a strategic ally of China. Such acts of aggression will, therefore, not be met well in Beijing.

More to follow.

In 2025, I got an amazing new job, moved country, and became a Dr (surreal). However, a lot of it was overshadowed with so much bad news.

So, for 2026, I wish you all the greatest of health and happiness. My resolution is to booze less, and help people more.

All the best my friends. ❤️
