If you take the lump sum, after taxes a $3M jackpot is probably around $1M. Or about $35-40k per year at a safe withdrawal rate. If you live in a very low cost of living area or move abroad you can have a lean retirement on that amount, but it’s not going to go very far in a major US metro area.

Playing the lottery to win $3M or $300M is “stupid” from an economic perspective. Put your money in a low fee index fund instead.

But if you treat it as an occasional cheap form of entertainment to daydream for a day or two, the entertainment value of a $300M jackpot is significantly higher.

Personally, I probably would not vote for a candidate that old if there were younger candidates that were just as good or better. But sometimes there aren’t. We should leave it to Maine voters; if they don’t want Mills they can vote for someone else.

Exactly. I probably drop $10 per year on random Powerball tickets when the jackpot gets big. I know the odds of winning are infinitesimal. It’s just a cheap way to daydream for a couple of days. I don’t do any other form of gambling and have very conservative investments.
