What happened on this day in WW2? October 18th: In 1944, Hitler activates Volkssturm, a militia of all able-bodied males 13-60 years old. Soviets enter Czechoslovakia through Carpathian passes but pause to let Germans crush Slovakian mountain uprising.

What happened on this day in WW2? October 17th: In 1941, in Convoy SC-48 off Iceland, German U-boat U-568 torpedoes and damages destroyer USS Kearny; first US casualties of the war—11 killed, 22 wounded. U-boats sink seven other ships in Convoy SC-48.
