Its more about Papyrus's character from when he witnessed the player kill Sans and the time he spends away from the player, what he does, and his growth of what it means to be a royal guardsman, and overcoming being a royal guard not for adoration, but to protect and honor his loved ones.

One of these days I wanna make something with my interpretation of Undertale Disbelief AU where Papyrus instead assumes the role of the last Royal Guard and that is his reason to kill you. Papyrus still believes in you, but he believed in Undyne and Sans too, and their causes.
