...& the frightful energy of the main torrent rushing down over a depression in the same ledge — pale tawny in color — powerful as a slice cut out of Niagara — & so near that one could “lay his hand upon it’s mane” if he wanted to. I did’nt.

It is, I dare say, far more fearful than “The Strid”, on Wharfe, commemorated by Wordsworth & Sam: Rogers…. I will merely note the exquisite contrasts of a thin curtain of water covering a long line of rock with a drapery of delicate lace,

...and so close to the wet slippery path way that you could dip your hand or foot into the torrent. You feel that if you touched it with a finger you would surely be dragged in & ground to powder. —

The “Narrows” for example, where the waters of West Canada Creek rush down, boiling & furious & all alive with destructive power, through a narrow gorge which a desperate man running for his life would try to leap,

I should not have ventured on them without his watchful aid & care — for I was shaky as to my knees — and notwithstanding the chains fixed in the rocks for pedestrians to hold on by, I felt nervous & almost dizzy at more points than one.

Good talk & good bed (tho’ my bed-room window could not be shut) & civil attendance. Explored the ravine of the Falls after dinner, with an intelligent contraband — “William” — a professional guide over those perilous paths for 22 years.

The crack Hotel at T.F. (Moore’s) closed for the season. Only Hospitium was the little road-side inn kept by one Joy, who reminded me of John Willet in “Barnaby Rudge”. It looked unpromising — but proved comfortable enough.

The grass in every field & meadow looked as fresh and green as last June & the pines & hemlocks retained their dark verdure quite undimmed, & both helped bring out & intensify the gold & orange scarlet & purple of the deciduous foliage.

Strong takes a railroad trip to Trenton Falls, New York. ("Contraband" is a Civil War term for a free black man.)

Oct. 15, 1866. The solemn splendor of the autumn wood, all the way from Albany, & at T. Falls, was a spectacle to be thankful for.

I find it arises from the stubble being bent a particular way by the cradle, as the cradler advanced, and accordingly reflecting the light but one way, and if I look over the field from the other side, the first swath will be dark and the latter white.

Thoreau, Oct. 12, 1851. I see where a field of oats has been cradled, by the railroad, alternate white and dark green stripes, the width of a swath, running across the field.

Have just spent half an hour — it’s now midnight — in bat-fowling, up-stairs & in the library. The game was captured, but got off somehow, & is probably now suspended behind some row of books.

But there are those who say there is no Cholera about, but only a few exaggerated cases of our common recognized constitutional “Cholera Morbus”, Western, not Asiatic.

George Templeton Strong, June 26, 1866. I lunched at Downing’s in the Custom House on raw clams washed down with a glass of lemonade. Rough practice when cholera is about.

Thoreau, Oct. 11, 1858. I observe the small cornel or bunch-berry conspicuously green now, like wintergreen and evergreen in the woods, amid the changed or withered foliage of the forest floor. Yet I have seen it purple (?) in the winter, methinks. [Photo FSUS]

Firemen and police gathered around 10 am in Inwood Hill Park, facing the Henry Hudson Bridge, followed by government boats and low-flying helicopters. Cops were talking to somebody on the bridge by walkie-talkie. Was there a jumper?
