Steel beams and broken concrete stand against the pale blue sky. Tall monoliths of a time long gone and forgotten. Faded glyphs of ancient languages, phantoms of what came before.

Skeletal towers held together with kudzu. Trees sprout up to take the place of buildings, their canopies filled with birdsong. One day there will be nothing left of the ruins.

Deer and wild rabbits graze the flatlands, while roving packs of dogs, wolves, and coyotes hunt. There is a lion or two, a few generations from those in captivity, now free in ways their ancestors only dreamed.

This is peace.

The photograph shows a beautiful sunset over my part of Ireland this evening. At the bottom of the picture is a tree line and to the left is a larger tree which is heavily silhouetted by the brilliance of the sunset behind it.

The sunset is low and has a brilliant gold, red and orange colours. Above that there are thick clouds that look like they’re on fire because of the orange and yellow colours given off that are illuminating that cloud from within.

Above that, the rest of the sky is a mixture of oranges, greys and dark blacks as it is slightly stormy here as well .
