Today we celebrate 10 years of our full-dome digital @glasgowplanetarium.bsky.social

We’ve shared countless cosmic journeys, the sounds of Pink Floyd & Queen, inspiring talks from the likes of Tim Peake, @chrislintott.bsky.social & Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and even a few weddings under the stars

It looks like you're excited for the first in this year's series of David Elder Lectures, because there are only a handful of tickets left for Wednesday 17 September.

Get yours before they go!

Did you know it's a double celebration? On the 14th of September, the first detection of gravitational waves was made by the @ligo.org and VIRGO collaboration, and on the 15th of September, the Planetarium at Glasgow Science Centre officially reopened after our digital refit! 🥳

Big day for the matriarchy! 🥳 Huge congrats to the awesome Prof. Doughtery, lead on the Jupiter-bound ESA JUICE mission & STFC Exec Chair.

If anyone's confused on the astro royal hierarchy: Michele and I are the astro equivalents of 🇬🇧Westminster and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Holyrood 🤗

Want to know more about the Vera Rubin Observatory? We can visit it in our stargazing shows! On Sat 5th July, we are running a Planetarium Late focusing on this incredible facility and the discoveries it has already made. Get tickets: https://www.glasgowsciencecentre.org/whats-on/planetarium-lates
A digital planetarium projection of the sky above the Vera Rubin Observatory. Above the telescope building in the foreground, lines are drawn between the stars to show the constellations. The telescope appears to be looking towards Virgo.
glasgowplanetarium.bsky.social
The Rubin Observatory is set in the Atacama Desert, Chile, high atop the mountain Cerro Pachón and far away from the lights of the closest towns. This gives it the perfect vantage point for its mission to rapidly survey the sky and discover new asteroids, supernovae and more!
A fulldome image showing the area outside the Vera Rubin Observatory while it works at night. Overhead, the Milky Way runs through the densely packed stars, interlaced with dark dust and pink clouds of hydrogen gas (normally invisible to the unaided eye). The white telescope turret and various outbuildings can be seen around the horizon.
glasgowplanetarium.bsky.social
Don't think we'll ever get bored of looking at images from the Rubin Observatory. This portion of the Virgo Cluster (one of the closest large galaxy clusters to us) really showcases the complexity of galaxy interactions.
Two bright blue stars stand out against a dense background of fainter stars. Spread across the field are the large, diffuse smudges of background galaxies. The galaxies are predominantly yellow, elliptical ones lacking defined spiral arms and have faint trails of light between them from stars being flung into intergalactic space as the galaxies merge.

Happy Solstice! Today is the longest day of the year as our planet is tilted most towards to the Sun in its orbit in the northern hemisphere. We have 17 hr 34 minutes of sunlight today!

Trois...Deux...Un...TOP!

Off it goes! A beautiful launch of #Biomass from Kourou.
glasgowplanetarium.bsky.social
We're tuned in to the launch of @esaearth.esa.int's #Biomass satellite.

As part of @esa.int's fleet of Earth observing satellites, #Biomass will measure forests around the globe, to help us monitor their health, and understand the impact of climate change, all from 660km above the Earth!
esa.int
📺 Watch live: the launch of @esaearth.esa.int's Biomass mission on Vega-C #VV26, liftoff scheduled for 29 April, 10.15 BST/11.15 CEST. #ESAwebTV coverage starts 09.55 BST/10.55 CEST. More details 👇

It will scan the entire planet every nine months over its planned 5 year mission, using radar and a 12m antenna. It was constructed at Airbus UK in Stevenage, before being transported to Kourou in French Guiana for launch on a Vega C rocket. Safe travels, #Biomass!
