I've finally got round to editing a video from our EV camper van trip In January 😅

In this episode, we explore Portugal and experience a very dangerous campsite hookup issue 😬https://youtu.be/n9zQ2Ngftpg

Well done Isle of Man! I wasn't aware of this, installing fossil heating in new build houses is bonkers
abigaildombey.bsky.social
Yes, BUT the Isle of Man banned fossil fuel heating systems for all new buildings.

So they’re not lax about regulations for everything.
Isle of Man Govemment
NET ZERO
ISLE OF MAN
A QUICK GUIDE TO THE FOSSIL FUEL HEATING SYSTEM BAN
From 1 January 2025 it will be illegal to install a fossil fuel heating system in a new building.
Heating our homes is one of the greatest contributors to the Island's greenhouse gas emissions. It is imperative to decarbonise our buildings if we are to reach net zero by 2050 and new homes and buildings will lead the way in this transition.
WHAT BUILDINGS ARE AFFECTED?
The ban will apply to:
• new domestic and non-domestic buildings
• a new extension.
The ban will not apply to:
• fossil fuel heating systems in existing buildings.
• the use of an existing fossil fuel heating system in a new extension by the installation of pipework and/or
radiators connecting a new extension to the existing fossil fuel heating system.

KEY DATES
 1 January 2024
Building Control refused on new buildings containing a fossil fuel heating system
Applications for Building Regulations Approval that contain a fossil fuel heating system will not be approved from this date.
1 January 2025
•Installing a fossil fuel heating system in a new building will be BANNED

This means you will need to make an amendment to your building control application and reapply for planning approval for your development.

FOSSIL FUEL HEATING SYSTEMS BAN - VISUAL GUIDE

Installation of fossil fuel heating system in new building - NOT PERMITTED
Use of existing fossil fuel heating system in now extension - PERMITTED
Installing a new or replacement fossil fuel heating systern in an existing building - PERMITTED
Installation of fossil fuel heating system in new extension - NOT PERMITTED

Heat pump monitoring for last 12months via OpenEnergyMon. These 2 visualizations show the hot water and space heating uses as separate charts.

My two favourite things 😀

It's arrived! Thanks to Mars from Renewable Heating Hub for sending over a copy of his new book. It's a fantastic resource for homeowners considering a heatpump, or trying to optimise an existing system. I'm proud to have contributed in a small way 😀
glynhudson.bsky.social
Yes, we can do solar monitoring with our emonpi energy monitor with clip on CT's docs.openenergymonitor.org/applications...
glynhudson.bsky.social
Agree, I doubt Musk has much input into Tesla these days, it's mostly hardworking clever people, with a thick skin to put up with his antics! 🙄
glynhudson.bsky.social
Context: If you wanted an EV in 2015 the options were basically a 24KWh Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe or a Model S, purchase cost aside there's absolutely no competition, this was the first long range EV, 10 years later it's still going strong & getting regular software updates!
glynhudson.bsky.social
There's not many 10-year-old cars with software this good, or 130kW+ charging speeds! The combination of autopilot and free charging make this the best road trip EV, Tesla was so far ahead of other manufacturers back in 2015, it's a shame they've lost their way a bit...

It still blows my mind how a heat pump can convert 2.2kW of electricity into 12.7kWh of heat! 🤯
glynhudson.bsky.social
We're on the verge of the heating season in North Wales, temperature is dropping to 11C, my newly installed Grant Aerona 290 heatpump has started trickling some heat in, impressive low modulation of 2.2kW (366W electrical) from this 9kW unit, COP of 5.7 at the moment 👍
glynhudson.bsky.social
It's good to be back #Ceuse 😃
glynhudson.bsky.social
Yes, it looks promising but that test was done in warm temperatures, I'm a bit concerned that in winter it may fall short of customer expectations, compared to a combi boilter, a conventional cylinder also enables utilising off-peak tariffs to reheat
glynhudson.bsky.social
Sure, if there's no space for a cylinder a Mini store is a good option, but customers would need to understand the limitations with flow rates and recharge time

Want mass heat pump adoption? Fix the running costs.

The electricity-to-gas price ratio is key. When policy makes electricity artificially expensive, the cleaner choice isn't the cheaper one. It's time to rebalance energy taxes, as this @thecccuk.bsky.social chart highlights.
glynhudson.bsky.social
That diagram is correct, the 12V AGM battery is the van's main starter battery under the bonnet, that in turn is topped up from the traction battery via the onboard DC-DC converter
glynhudson.bsky.social
It's impressive that the Grant 9kW R290 is able to modulate down to under 400W of electrical input and 2.5kW of heat output, @openenergymon.bsky.social monitoring data from my system is available publicly on HPM: heatpumpmonitor.org/system/view?...
glynhudson.bsky.social
The new FRV lock shield valves from Firepower are very useful to see exactly how much flow rate each radiator is getting, this makes the balancing process easy and precise 👍 www.firepowerheating.co.uk/frv
glynhudson.bsky.social
Thanks to City Plumbing for supplying the rads, they are own brand Halcyon, manufactured by Stelrad, amazingly all 10 rads were delivered with no damage, that's impressive it's so easy to damage large rads in transit 👏
glynhudson.bsky.social
I've finally finished upgrading radiators and filling my space heating circuit, 10 rads and a towel rail have been upgraded, all piped TBOE to maximise output, existing rads were old single panel non convector and in poor condition, but I was able to re-use existing pipework 😃
