It is neither the House Sparrow nor the Common Blackbird but the Common Chaffinch which is our most abundant breeding bird. It occurs almost anywhere where there are several trees, for it is not very choosy. In winter, the Chaffinch is a very common visitor to bird tables. Here it mostly makes do with gleaning seeds that have fallen to the ground. Since the females are a little smaller and therefore not so well adapted to winter conditions, they migrate further to the west and south than males. Therefore, in Switzerland and especially in Northern Europe, males predominate in winter. This may be the reason why the Common Chaffinch was given its scientific name Fringilla coelebs, the «bachelor finch».

For many people the Mallard is quite simply the wild duck. It is the most widely distributed dabbling duck in the world and also the ancestor of our domestic duck. Mallards are extraordinarily adaptable and breed in a number of habitats from Siberia to the southern tropics. Moreover, they are hardly shy of humans and often gather at feeding places. They also nest in the middle of towns in window boxes, on flat roofs and on balconies. Ducks with varying colours of white or dark sections of feathers often occur. These are hybrids between Mallards and domestic ducks.

Die Stockente ist für viele die Wildente schlechthin. Sie ist die am weitesten verbreitete Gründelente der Welt und die Stammform unserer Hausente. Stockenten sind ausserordentlich anpassungsfähig und brüten in einer Vielzahl von Lebensräumen von Sibirien bis in die Subtropen. Zudem haben sie nur wenig Scheu vor Menschen, lassen sich füttern und nisten auch mitten in der Stadt in Blumenkisten auf Dachterrassen und Balkonen. Oftmals treten abweichend gefärbte Enten mit weissen oder dunklen Federpartien auf. Dabei handelt es sich um Bastarde zwischen Stockenten und Hausentenrassen.

Die Amsel ist mit ihrem melodischen, wohlklingenden Flöten, das manchmal schon im Januar erklingt, einer der ersten Frühlingsboten. Sie singt gerne an exponierten Stellen, auf Dachfirsten oder Baumwipfeln, so dass ihr Gesang weithin zu hören ist. Das liebliche, gedämpfte Schlussmotiv wird bei geschlossenem Schnabel gesummt und klingt wie ein entferntes Echo. Die Amsel war ursprünglich eine scheue Bewohnerin dichter, unterholzreicher Wälder. Erst im Lauf der letzten 100 Jahre ist sie so zahlreich in Siedlungen und Städte vorgedrungen, dass sie heute in Europa zu den häufigsten und am weitesten verbreiteten Brutvögeln gehört.
