A pelorus looks similar to a compass, but it doesn’t actually show directions. It is a simple, effective tool which is used to determine the bearing of a landmark or celestial body relative to the ship’s heading.

In 1617, Joris Carolus was commissioned by the Noordsche Compagnie - a Dutch whaling cartel - to lead a voyage of discovery.

The mission was apparently successful, with the discovery of two new islands. The first he named Nyeu Hollandt, while the other he named Opdams Eylandt.

Recently we were talking a lot about the surgeon on the Mary Rose, and how he was a member of the Company of Barbers and Surgeons.

The 1542 painting by Hans Holbein the younger, King Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons, is even believed to potentially feature our surgeon!
