Springsteen contrasted this with past presidents, recalling “Obama’s on the beach in Hawaii moments,” “Bushes fishing in Kennebunkport,” “Reagan’s on horseback,” and “Kennedys playing touch football on the cape.” His message was that these glimpses of humanity once united the country through shared joy and cultural expression.He argued that the country “used to be” one that embraced collective fun and charity, citing the ice bucket challenge that “raised millions for charity,” and leaders who brought comfort in hard times. He criticized the shift from “a first lady who planted a garden” to one who “ripped one out,” saying America is now “rudderless and joyless.” For Springsteen, the absence of these traditions has drained the “shared experience of humanity” that made the nation strong.
