Yeah, it could also be further out in its elliptical orbit in Kirk's time. It's interesting, in Arena they call it both a "planet" and an "asteroid."

Writer Alan B. McElroy confirmed in our interview that the planet we see in #StrangeNewWorlds S3E9 "Terrarium" is indeed the same planet we see in TOS' "Arena" (notice the Vasquez Rocks in both images)!
