This post examines the science on whether certifications such as the Marine Stewardship Council, Friend of the Sea, and Fair Trade correlate with responsibly-caught seafood. When buying seafood there are two other important factors that we should consider. #fish #seafood #climate #sustainability
Are seafood certifications useful? Consider these two steps first!

The carbon footprint of plastic production is around 2.2 billion tonnes of CO2-eq - that's more than double previous estimates. At the current growth rate, plastics will be one of the biggest drivers of climate change by 2050.

I just discovered Parmela Creamery vegan cheese – the sharp cheddar is one of the best plant-based hard cheeses that I’ve tried so far. However, the company has been very quiet and is no longer selling product at Whole Foods – is it in trouble?

Parmela Creamery vegan cheddar is excellent – but is it about to disappear?

Many crops can tolerate over 30% shade cover with no drop in yield and yet the Rainforest Alliance only requires 15% shade cover, having reduced this standard over the years. So, should we support the RA?

@ran.org‪, ‪@greenpeace.org‬, ‪@greenpeace.eu‬,
Is Rainforest Alliance an effective certification?
The level of shade cover is one of the best ways to determine if forest habitats are being maintained. The good news is that shade-tolerant crops such as cacao can tolerate over 30% shade cover wit…

Very sweet! And, yes, a lovely rendition of a great song.
An abacus is a machine you can really count on.

(From the excellent Celery episode of #Portlandia in which Carrie declares social bankruptcy with @kumail.bsky.social but he's more excited about #Pink having retweeted his joke.)

CYOOOOT!

Tap tap...is this thing on?

Nice! A couple of ideas to add to it: One (shown nicely in the film Sliding Doors) is that diverged paths can actually lead to approximately the same place in the future.
Second, sometimes what we perceive as a missed opportunity can actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise! (And vice versa!)
Thanks for the advice, John - much appreciated.
I guess we have to balance that risk against the desire to see user numbers drop on X.
And thanks for the domain tip too - I had read about it but wasn't sure how much difference it would make. I guess it's a good idea. (I'm stronger on biology ;))
My car is still going strong after 27 years and has been a moss habitat for some time now :)
(I hear people like moss here)
If anyone is interested in my thoughts on minimizing the climate impact of car ownership, please lmk!

And the kicker is that it won't even save money! IRS income will be radically lower this year ($500 Billion projected losses). So there's not even that upside to crow about!
For some variety, this is Sparkles the cat, celebrating St. Patrick's Day last week 🍀 Thank you for Bluesky, btw ❤️
Congrats on moving away from X (esp. as you had many followers there). I'm checking out people who moved from X but feel that many of their posts there are being repressed. (Quelle surprise!)
I'm working on a post (on greenstarsproject.org) on why we should all move to Bluesky. #eXit #Xodus
