Until 1938, the painting The Beggar (The Good-Natured Child) by Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller, one of the most significant Austrian painters of the 19th century, was owned by Irma Löwenstein, a Viennese Jew. Under Nazi rule, she was forced to sell it under duress.

Swamp Legend by Paul Klee, labeled degenerate art (Entartete Kunst) by the Nazis, was confiscated in 1937 from the Landesmuseum Hannover, where it had been on loan from art historian Sophie Lissitzky-Küppers. Since 1982, the artwork has been housed in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich

Starting July 1937, the painting was displayed in the Entartete Kunst exhibition in several German cities on the so-called Dada Wall.Degenerate art was defined as works that insult German feeling.In 2017, Lissitzky-Küppers' heirs reached an ownership agreement with the city of Munich. #art

Erich Heckel and Otto Mueller playing Chess (1913) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

The painting was part of the collection of Jewish art historian and art dealer Dr. Victor Wallerstein. Persecuted by the Nazis, he sought refuge in Italy in 1936, where he remained under threat.

To finance his survival, Wallerstein sold artworks, including the Kirchner painting. After his heirs filed restitution claims, it was agreed that the painting by Kirchner would remain at the Brücke Museum, which had acquired it in 1973. The museum made a compensation payment to the heirs.

Litzlberg am Attersee by Gustav Klimt

Amalie Redlich inherited the painting Litzlberg am Attersee (1915) by Gustav Klimt from her brother Victor. In 1941, Amalie Redlich and her daughter Mathilde were deported by the National Socialists to Łódź and murdered.

The apartment of the deported Amalie Redlich was cleared out by the Gestapo. Through the Salzburg art dealer and collector Friedrich Welz, the confiscated painting entered the Salzburg State Gallery in 1944. It remained in Salzburg until it was restituted 2011 to Amalie's heir in Canada.

Karl Grünwald, owned the painting Herbstsonne II-Wilted Sunflowers (Autumn Sun II) by Egon Schiele. It was confiscated by the Nazis and sold at auction in 1942. The painting was submitted to Christie's for authentication, identified as part of Grünwald's collection, and returned in 2006 #art

In 2000, the Strasbourg Museum restituted Gustav Klimt's Die Erfüllung to Karl Grünwald's descendants. The Viennese antiquarian had sent it to Strasbourg in 1938 after Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany. Later, the German occupiers confiscated the 1.93 × 1.2 m painting, one of Klimt’s major works

Lovis Corinth's 1911 painting "Frau mit Lilien" depicts the artist’s wife among lilies. The original owner, Otto Ollendorf, tragically took his life in 1939 due to Nazi persecution. The Gestapo seized the painting during his family’s emigration. It was restituted to the heirs in November 1998. #art

Egon Schiele's painting Landscape at Krumau was owned by Daisy (née Steiner) and Wilhelm Hellmann.Seized by the Nazis in October 1938, it was sold in Vienna in 1942 and acquired by Wolfgang Gurlitt. In 1953, Gurlitt sold it to the Neue Galerie in Linz, where it remained until its restitution in 2003

The Foxes (German: Die Füchse) is a 1913 painting by German artist Franz Marc. It was housed at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf until it was returned to the heirs of Kurt Grawi in 2022. The heirs subsequently sold it at auction. #art #artworksn #artcollectors

Opposition grows to the German government's recent decision to reform the art restitution process in Germany by creating an arbitration tribunal to adjudicate claims.
The main criticism is that this is not a reform but rather major steps backwards for art claimants.
