It sounded no different than it had just moments ago, and yet the cacophonous noise of the machine told the Librarian everything she needed to know.

As an elaboration, Emil exits a low point in his life by becoming religiously attracted to a boyish woman. He then paints the idea of her, which ends up looking like his best friend and also being a representation of himself. This could mean many things but it's also downright psychosexual.

Hi!
I sketched a girl again today. The face turned out bad — I really need to practice drawing bodies, but I keep getting stuck on faces. I can’t feel the pen at all, the lines are stiff, the proportions are weak.
But hey, at least I spent time drawing!

Hi!
