Today, Saul Zabar passed away. For more than 70 years, he was the principal owner of the legendary Zabar’s market in #NYC. This #NYTMCollection image captures the Zabar’s storefront in 1957, twenty-three years into its time in business and seven years into Saul Zabar’s tenure.

My ex lived there when we first met and we used to eat there when I visited from SF. The chicken pie omelette was a wonderful thing. Sadly, they closed several years ago. kmph.com/news/local/c...

So I bought a tub of Harris Teeter store-brand fresh salsa last night and it tasted really familiar. I couldn't put my finger on why and then it hit me that it tastes just like the salsa they served at the Chicken Pie Shop in Fresno.

I hated them when I lived in California too, especially after they destroyed Thrifty and Payless.

I watched them take over a local chain in NC when I was really young, Thrifty and Payless in California when I lived there, and then about half of Eckerd after I moved back east. It was never pretty.
